Constantius II , .problem With Mintmark

SMHIBI : this mintmark doesn' t exist , H = Heraclea SMANTBI : this mintmark exists for this coin , Antiochia 11th officina and was in use for this period .The reference is RIC VIII,56 .In this case , the A and the N are written in ligature and the T is written as an I,not as a T like in Constantius and in exercitus ? The N is also looking as the R in gloria .I think it is a coin from Antiochia , but I saw never such a mark . Any ideas ? albert Report this Post to the Staff

Ben Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 4208 Posts	Posted 01/11/2019 3:59 pm My first thought looking at that was SMANTB(...), so I think you are correct, SMANTBI. The AN isn't a ligature, the M is just thinner than you might expect and the A is connected to the N by a die crack. Looks like the exergue was damaged on the die itself. If you look at other Antioch issues for Constantius II, you'll see how they laid out the mark - fits this example well. Report this Post to the Staff
