So I got this larger Auralian bronze in a lot of "uncleaned" coins from Dirty Old Coins. And I am a bit puzzled by it. It has obviously already been cleaned, but the surfaces are very, umm, wavy and uneven. The bust is also pretty bad. Methinks that it had some bronze disease and it was removed to show a pitted surface. Although the legends are very clear in hand (not so much from my bad scans), I just don't know what to make of this coin. Is this a botched electrolysis job? Either way, might it at least be worth the $4 that I paid?

Acid could do this job... 4$ for this?! I think I could make a fortune with selling coins in your country :) In my country they are selling coins like that about 3 pieces for 1$.

Caesar381- Well, I wasn't expecting anything this bad (and the obverse does look a bit better in hand and all of the lettering is nice), but the waviness of the fields just makes me wonder if this was a botched electrolysis job or if electrolysis removed a bunch of verdigris from the fields and revealed a very uneven surface.

I have no idea what may have caused the problems with this coin, but this goes to what I said in another thread about uncleaned lots. They cost $3-$5 per coin and at least half to two thirds are worthless.

I was in Croatia not too long ago and the coins of this condition were selling for about $1. Even so, I would love to be in your country Caesar381 just to be able to pick through the available coins.

I've seen this before on Aurelian coins, in fact I have a couple in my collection that look the same. I think it might be the result of the silver wash somehow mixing with the bronze if the coin was in damp soil. Just a guess, but it's as good as any.

jwharper Croatia and Serbia are much different. Croatia is expensive, and since Serbia is poor at this moment everything is cheap. So there are many guys who doing metaldetecting(as me,heheh) and sell them for cheap(not me).

archraz, when you buy uncleaned coin you expect(of course) you will get nice looking coin when you clean it. But if you buy from experts you cant get good coin for small price because they study every coin before they sell it. I buy uncleaned lots(100-1000 pieces) from noobs who dont like to clean coins and dont know what is under dirt. That way you can encounter very rare and nice coins, and you pay about 0,3-1$ each. I got nerva dupondius like that for only 1$. So important thing is to know from who are you buying :)

You are missing a treat then, my friend. I lived in Germany for 8 years, and have traveled to every continent since I retired from the military. Just in the past 10 years, I've been to some wondrous places such as Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, France, Spain, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, Australia, Korea, the Philippines, Columbia, Mexico, Brazil, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and of course our northern neighbor Canada. Some of these places I traveled to several times. My youngest son lives in Mons, Belgium, where we visit at least once per year.

Although I've traveled around the world and find something I like everywhere I go, my favorite place is home in the good ole US of A. But, I am also a Europhile. Meaning, if I had to live somewhere else it would be Europe. No place in particular, but I love the central plaza layout of many of the small to medium size cities such as Mons. Walking around the plaza watching the people (pretty young ladies mostly), eating great food, and drinking fantastic beer. It don't get much better than that.

Speaking of food, I have my favorites from around the world as well. If you force me to choose, it would be good hearty German food first followed by Greek and other Mediterranean Cuisine.

As for Roman ruins, nothing beats Rome and the surrounding area, but there are some great places in Spain, Croatia, France, Germany, Turkey and others. I should post some of the pics of ruins from these places.

Bottom line is you should go when you have the time and the finances. Being there can't be beat. And, if you want to hire someone to be your guide, I'm always available.

Regards,

JW

My son who lives in Belgium now lived at Veliko TÅrnovo teaching English back early 1990's. He nearly married a Bulgarian girl, but it didn't work out (too bad, I don't like his current wife).

I understand that it will become increasingly difficult to get coins from Bulgaria because of the new laws. As I understand why the laws are there, this will only serve to drive the antiquities trade underground. It's a shame for sure. I would love to come back and go metal detecting with you. I've been wanting to find a coin so I can claim it directly without some middleman. It wouldn't even have to be a great coin.

The way the economy is right now, I don't think I will be getting the work I once was. That's really too bad. I miss the traveling. It's been nearly 5 months since my last trip to Spain, and nothing on the horizon either. But if I make it back to Bulgaria, I'll be sure to look for you.
