Recently with all the hubbub about ASEs due to the 2011 set, I decided to look at the few ASEs I have more carefully.

Not having direct access to them at home, by the time I got the 2008W back in hand, I had forgotten which REV was the error
Was it the REV where "UNITED" has a "smiley U," or a "U with a tail?" After applying a loupe, making a note of which "U" it has, and triple checking so as not to have to make another trip, an eternity seemed to pass until I could find whether or not this was the elusive error coin.
Here is what I saw...

I-Checked-My-2008-W-Burnished-ASE---Its-A-2007-Rev!

My "Smiley U" is a 2007 REV!

I definitely need a long line of dancing fruit here!

HELP!
Now I call upon the learned ones of the CCF family for advice:
1. Is it worth it to join NGC or another TPG just to get this thing certified/slabbed/graded?
2. What are the chances this can come back an MS70?

I have seen the "game" TPGs play. A couple of trusted dealers have told me that newer ASEs they get slabbed have around a 40% chance of rating an MS/PF70, whereas private individuals might have a 30-35% chance. So is the overall value of this ASE worth it? I know the label makes the price higher when/if selling to the masses.

Note the pic (minus the frame) of the ASE REV is actually one from a website. I will try to get actual pics when I go get the piece in hand again on another day!

Wow. That almost makes up for the ASE computer order bandit. Almost.

Maybe some pics. of the coin would be a good start.
A 70 is always rare. Just one imperfection anywhere on the coin and it's down from there.
You can use Anacs without having to join anything.
NGC the best bet if not wanting to use anacs.
Pcgs is getting pretty crappy as of late.

NGC has been making mistakes as well. PCGS and NGC will charge an exorbitant price for encapsulating a variety or error coin; up to $50.00. I would use either ICG or ANACAS where the price is just an added $5.00 for a variety or error coin, if that anomaly is stated. To research a particular error or variety cost a bit more with those companies.

OK, I finally got some pics of my 2008 REV of 2007 ASE.

1. Grade opinions please (if possible from the pics)

2. Is this considered a MULE or not? If not, is there a proper term for this type of error?

Note the white line on the REV pic had to be in the plastic as I checked for them after viewing he pics and they are not on the coin. The tiny white spots are inside the plastic case.

I noted what appears to be a small black spot above the "D" in "UNITED." When I looked closely, its not corrosion or anything, it appears to be a place that, when you tilt the coin, the reflection is slightly different (polishing?).

3. I also noted some Machine Doubling in some of the design. Would this affect the grading?

Wow, been waiting for the update and the photos are great! (don't know about the Mule question, though I'd imagine that'd be the case)

I would think it would be considered a Transitional Variety.....?

I thought a mule would be two different denominations....
