The 50 cent 1872 bar V is well known and priced accordingly. Only 1 exists in MS and < 10 exist in VF+. I have two in VF+ and recently bid up a damaged VF on ebay to $1325 before giving up. Zonad sneaked a damaged unlabeled VF past me for $50...lol... They are usually labeled or authenticated, but a few still exist raw, unlabeled, and unknown to the seller trying to sell. The 25 cent 1872 bar V is virtually unknown, except to a handful of people here. About 20-25 are known to exist now, I think ICCS authenticated 12 and I will have CCCS authenticate my 3. Zonad probably has half a dozen of those known and is the discoverer I am told :)...easily worth $2000-$6000 depending on grade, they can still be occasionally had for ~ $10-$50. I will never let anyone have one on ebay for less than $500 (if I can help it). You will never find one labeled in a store. The 25 cent 1880 bar V is even less well known, probably to only 5 people or so. I have found 2 so far and never paid any premium to get it. They should also be worth upwards of $2000, one day, when they're a bit better known...

About 350 people have read this thread so far,and its not the first time these varieties have come up.To say they are not well known is absurd,I have known about them for the five years since I started upgrading my Vicky 25cents and so have others, yet they still pop up on ebay at non-premium prices.Maybe only a handful of collectors are interested in them.

Dollar...your coin is extremely unusual... ...as far as I know...all the quarters recognized as 1872 A/V or Bar V, also have a repunched N in CANADA.
Yours does not. I would love to see a close-up of the V in VICTORIA. You may have a very valuable coin there...

Two new varieties discovered on this thread. littlemoney's coin is interesting because for the 50 cent coin it is a die pairing I have not seen yet or it is not an A/V. Dollar's coin is a whole new obverse from the one we commonly know as the 25 cent A/V. I'm amazed.

Littlemoney, do you have the 1872 50c in hand? The coin looks weird from the picture.
as for the 1872 25c, I don't have the coin in hand, and will post a close up of the V later.
What do you guys think of the grade?

I have at least one 25 cent with the around the clock die crack. I will have to take a look to see if it is the same die as yours,Dollar.

The 25c barV without N doubling has been discussed before on this forum or another,it's nothing new,a variety only a handful of collectors are aware of.The bar is not from a repunch by an A but a crack and further deterioration similar to the doubled N variety.

Just so everyone is aware, some of these coins are like everything else, made in china.

Good one. I could have bought the 1872H 50 cent piece the China mint used to make all the Vicky dies but I couldn't bring myself to pay $1900 for a ef coin.

Charlton made a huge mistake with 25 cent varieties, IMO...
They are highly interesting as well as rare. The 1872 50 cent varieties they have included are much more common, and they get a full page treatment, but 1872 25 cent varieties, not a peep, except for a 7/7, which is barely noticeable.
One of these days, this mistake has to be corrected...just takes so darn long to get any half decent information into that book :)...
