I'm pretty new at this too. It looks like a lamination error to me because the surface looks like its flaking off... If its something else someone around here should know what it is. I was just taking a wild guess :)

I haven't been doing this very long either, but that definitely looks like a lamination error to me.

From all the errors and comments I have been seeing and reading here, I would say this is a lamination error to CCF

It is a lamination. Value? Check e-Bay for sold prices on laminations. John1

I've never looked on ebay for such errors but at most coin shows I go to, almost any error coin is selling for about $10+. Lamination errors are a lot more common than people think. Offsets, Broadstrikes and clipped planchet types of errors too are about the same for being common. I seldom see any for more than $20 and only if in MS grades.

What causes this? I thought only zinc cents were laminated.
I had no idea there was a premium for these pennies. I think they look ugly and wouldn't want them in my collection at all. I shudder to think how many pennies like this I have thrown away over the years. (When I was a kid, I used to throw away my ugly pennies because I had got the idea that stores wouldn't accept them.)

Quote: What causes this? I thought only zinc cents were laminated. Lamination can happen any time the alloy isn't blended properly.
