On those 1913 cents the rims turned orange. It's kind of a telltale for coins that came from that roll.

I am curious again,

did coins back then actually come in rolls?
or did someone simply just roll them
which brings another question:
when did mints and banks start to roll coins?

With the exception of the 1939 and 1949 dollars, small denomination coins came in mint bags. I have seen archive photos of silver dollars being placed on edge and "packed" in crates.... the mint did not issue rolls until after the Winnipeg facility was up and running. For some reason (which I can't explain), 1982 comes to mind....

I believe that Brinks was responsible for the "mint rolls" until quite recently and coins were(and perhaps still are) rolled and wrapped on Brinks equipment under supervision of Brinks staff at the mint.I don't know if the mint has completely moved away from its dependence on Brinks yet.

SPP,
I was thinking back to Vicky times....
how did they do it then...
just drop and put in a bag or box? ouch.. bag marks, scratches dings.....uh....
if so, where do all the perfect or nearperfect MS 66ish etc coins come from?
I just went through all my 18** high MS stuff... and honestly... beats me on what is a 64, 65 or a Ms66....., never mind a 67....
The gods are having serious arguments..and disbelieves.

To follow on to SPP'as comments. Victorian coins were shipped from England in canvas bags packed into wooden boxes. Early rolls were assembled by collectors or hoarders.

I also believe some of the high mint state Vicky coins came from English collections. I am pretty sure some privileged collectors got Canadian coins directly from The Royal Mint, so these coins didn't make the ocean crossing in a wooden box.
