wow, I am so happy you posted this! I have been searching through rolls for a while now, and its one of my favorite pastimes with my wife and her nephew who stays with us. its fun for anyone and we can all do it, and it costs virtually nothing because you just redeposit all the clad. as for tips, the guys above have mentioned most of them: - mark your rolls so you can tell if you searched them - try to get rolls from different banks - if your bank offers a free coinstar, well you can go to town. you get the rolls, search them, take them to the free coinstar, then take the cash to another bank or that same bank for more rolls, and it speeds things up significantly. as for finds, well, I have a lot but a recent favorite is a 1971 s proof nickel in amazing condition. I have found a couple silver rosies, 3 War Nickels, many canadian coins, lots of wheaties, and some euros and a new york metro subway token. look we know we arent going to get rich but thats not the point, right? it seriously is a satisfying pastime when you arent doing traditional collecting. so good luck and I hope this thread encourages more people to do this!

BenVA, thx for the thread. Have just shown it to my wife and even she is excited about searching rolls. Loved her comparison, like playing the slots but getting to take your money with you when you are done. We are starting today. Jim

I went roll-searching for the first time just this week, after reading about "roll attacks" in the "Interesting find from circulation" thread. I went into my local credit union and asked if I could have rolls of change for a twenty. I got one roll each of quarters and dimes and two each of nickels and cents. I've looked through only the cents so far. Nothing spectacular - but I found a few very bright and shiny coins from recent years to preserve. And I did find a rather odd-looking 1987 D which perhaps I should post a scan of.
The quarter roll is in a different wrapper from the others. I haven't unwrapped it yet but looked at the ends, and I think it is a roll of fresh-from-the-mint 2006 South Dakota quarters instead of circulated coins. The mint mark I can see is P which is funny becase I see far more D coins here in the Dallas area - I assumed all the local banks got their coin rolls from Denver. I won't unwrap this roll until I have time to carefully inspect each coin and can get them into a holder right away for protection.

Searching through rolls, bags, etc from the bank may result in great finds depending on where you live. If in a small town area the coins may not be circulating much so finding decent coins may be fairly easy. In some farm land areas some farmers have old jars of coins laying around that occationally get put into a bank and are found in rolls later. Then again in very large cities there are so many robberies where coins are stollen and then spent as coins. In poorer neighborhoods people occatioinally dip into old jars, cans, etc for coins for a laundromat. I've been lucky in the past searching rolls and bags of coins from banks but lately due to all the coin collecting interest the amount of rarer coins is deminishing.

Wow, I am suprised at the response to this thread. I went to 2 banks today and I ended up getting a total of 16 rolls of halves. I did not notice until I got home that the eight I got at the first bank were marked with a black marker at the edge of the roll.I believe another person had already went through these. I did not find anything in these rolls. The other 8 rolls came from another bank and the rolls had Brinks marked on them. I found one 40% silver a 1967 in these rolls. I may have to get some more soon. BenVA

I go through a lot of rolls, especially quarters. I find lots of neat varieties and a few error coins. Apparently these don't get looked at much so you can even find the old ones in high grade.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

do you need to go to an old bank? Where I live all of the banks have been built in the last 5 years, will they have older rolls? I personnally have only bought rolls once, from my hometown bank, 3 rolls of halves and 10 rolls of pennies. I found 5 wheats (none I needed)and just got a good start on a set from 1980 to 2000, wit a 1/2 dozen or so bicentennials in the halves

kurt, quote: ...offers a free coinstar, well you can go to town. you get the rolls, search them, take them to the free coinstar,...
I also do the same at one bank because they are the only ones that has a 'coin arcade'. and cash them in for more rolls. Most banks in my neighborhood don't give up roll unless you are a customer. I've even asked if the were going to have the Presidential $ coins, they had no idea what I was talking about. You would think working in a financial institution they would be on top of this. It was explain to me that they DON'T LIKE $ coins. Which really is a shame. Don't they want the business? Oh well their lose.

Also go through different bank rolls find allot of old pennies, dimes, quarters and nickles. Also have been getting rolls of the State Quarters from the banks. Not sure if they will have the new president dollars or not ask the bank they did not even know what I was talking about.

Its good free entertainment but after a while the novelty wears off and it's down right dull and boring. Sure you might find something here and there but look at all the wasted time when that time could be spent with family and friends. I save the roll searching for a rainy day or a snow storm when you have to stay inside. Otherwise go out and live life. Time is the most precious thing we have ..spend it with others, the coins won't know the difference.

Searched $100 worth of Dollar rolls, but only Eisenhowers, no silver... might have found a lamination or strike through error, though. Also searched through about $50 worth of halves in the last week, but no luck.
