I haven't searched through rolls of coins in years, but recent threads on this forum are giving me the itch. I'm thinking of picking up some dimes and nickels next time I'm at the bank. I'll probably need one of those desktop lighted magnifiers too. What do you guys think are the chances of finding an old Mercury dime or even a barber? Or an old Buffalo nickel? I wonder how many hundreds of dollars worth of change I'll have to search through to find something like that. I remember when I was a kid my friend's grandmother picked him up some rolls of cents at the bank, then stopped at the coin shop and bought a 1909 VDB, G or VG I don't remember. She probably paid about $2 for it at the time. Anyway, she hid it in the roll, trying to spark his interest. Amazing, all these years later I still think about that.

Personally, I think buying a Indian Head penny is a lot cheeper than searching 100,000 pennies just to find one. Yes, its fun, and I search rolls every once in a while. But if I like worked for every hour a spent searching rolls, I think I would be able to buy better coins. Ty

Tykimeister, you're right. But I don't think it's about the amount of searching hours invested compared to the value of the coin. It's the thrill of the search. What's going to match the excitement (numismatically speaking) of finding a Indian head in a roll? It may be in the first roll you search. Or maybe the second, or third... You never know. I'm intrigued by the idea.

I recently got into coin roll hunting since it has been to cold to go out metal detecting as of now I have gone through 20 dollars worth of pennies, one roll of halves and have picked up about 5 dollars in loose halves ( none of the banks have hardly had halves around here lately) I have found 6 wheat pennies, 1 1950 canadian penny and 3 40% halves, I search pennies because there are so many errors out there and being so cold you cant do anything outside right now it really keeps me busy looking for errors although I havent found anything yet. I do all my banking at one bank, I pick up my rolls from other banks (no one has asked me if I have an account there) and I deposit everything into my bank, I figure since I have an account there they cant get to upset with me carrying in a bunch of rolled coins, and even though I dont have accounts at the places I pick up coins I have two seperate tellers from two banks keeping there eyes open for me.

TSmith3510, Yeah, I know what you mean. I really enjoy the feeling when you find that silver quarter or dime. Also, I once found a 1889 Indian Head penny at work. First one found ever. Ty

Well I got 20 rolls of pennies and 10 rolls of nickels. Me and my wife went through them and nearly filled a penny and nickel book I had lying around. I found no wheat's though, and only 1 older nickel. None of the three banks I stopped at this evening had any half dollar rolls, but I did buy some of the loose ones at the counter. I think it was about $17 worth. No finds there either. Well I may try again tomorrow. BenVA

Never did desire to collect rolls. I guess you have to have a lot of loot to do so. The average collector probably does not have the funds to go into that area. Also, a lot of room would be needed to store them in.

Luskie, most of the folks here will tell you just the opposite. Most of them will buy rolls, go through them, and return the normal coins for another set. While they may get a couple of nice finds out of the rolls, they are not keeping every one. A $100 investment may take a long time as long as you keep recycling through the ones you don't want. It's entertaining for most, and the thrill of the hunt is exactly what some thrive on. Hope this explains a few things for you...

cpfull, I don't think it would matter too much, if the bank was new. Where I live there are new banks, but older residents who still roll up their change and bring them to the bank. I have had good luck with rolls where I live. I think good finds depend more on who is rolling them up.

Went through 4 rolls today. 2 were brand new 2001-D's, the others were mixed, but 1 roll had 3 silver 40%, and like 6 BU bicenntennials - at least MS 65/66's. It was pretty cool.

I cleaned out a desk drawer recently and discovered 7 rolls of Lincoln cents that we'd rolled up and meant to take to the bank but never did. So tonight I thought I'd open them up and look at them. It must have been in 1999 when we rolled them because there were no 2000 or later. I wasn't collecting seriously in those days... Anyway, I did find a 1958 Wheatie in the stash and two S mintmark cents from the 70's.

went through another 4 rolls today - found 8 40%, w/ one 1965 that looked like a 66/67 no prob. There was at least one in each roll. It was sweet.
