Madmartigan--glad you enjoyed the post. I wish I could see the security tapes at both banks. I'm sure it would be pretty entertaing to watch myself try to carry an open box and a bunch of loose rolls out of the one bank and dropping the roll of dollars all over the floor. My guess is the look on my face at the bank where the teller gave me the whole $500 box would be pretty funny too.

Someone should start a thread about funny things that happen at banks/coin shops.

Well I searched $1000 last night and nothing . Oh well, I guess I due for a 'famine'.

Unfortunately I can never find halves in quantity, then when I find some they are all really beaten up from service in a Casino about 100 miles from here. I have my best luck with nickels and cents. My weirdest find in a nickel roll was a British 20p, a seven sided coin masquerading as a nickel, but a coin worth 41¢ appearing as a nickel pleases me no less.

I've gotten a good 6 or 7 twenty-pence coins this year alone when searching nickels. A few 5 Euro cent coins as well.

Just finished going through 2 boxes of pennies. I keep any foreign coins or non pennies, wheaties, 1960 (cuz I was born that year), S mint, and errors and here is what I got out of them:

Box 1
Non-Pennies
1979P,1983P dimes
Wheats
1944,1946,1947,1953D,1956,1956D (x2),1957D (x2)
1960 Pennies
1960 (x2),1960D (x2)
S-Mint
1969S,1970S,1971S (x2)
Errors
1995 Crack Head,1999 Filled bottom of "B" in Liberty
Canadian Centennial Penny 1967

Box 2
Foreign
Canadian Pennies
1964,1974,1983,1986,1987,1989
Wheats
1940,1941,1941,1943,1944,1944D,1945,1948,1953D,1955,1956D
S-Mints
1968S,1969S,1970S (x3),1971S (x3),1974S
1960 Pennies
1960,1960D (x4)
Error Pennies
1983 Clash (x2),1989 Die Crack Rev,1995 Toned Crack head

I've had worse boxes! That makes $250 in pennies that I have searched (only started a couple of months ago). That is the most S Mint pennies I have ever found. Normally, they are more scarce than wheaties for me here in Florida.

I bought 200 bucks worth of coins of from my bank. I was going use the money to pay bills and had since I some extra time. I may sell and buy some more to search.
1. One 25 dollar box of pennys. I was disapointed after it was in car. Reason the intire box is all 2007 d bu rolls of pennys. All brand new coins of the same thing. Ow well I was wanting an box to search to find stuff to finish sets. I guess I cant complain since it all bu coins in box. I guess it rare to get an intire box full of bu coins. I never had that happen yet intill last night. No search there since it all bu coins.
2. 100 Dollar fed box of nickels. I did find 8 bucks worth pre 1964 stuff in there. The most rare nickels there. 1948s, 1955 , 1956 p , 1943p wartime silver. 3 uk 20 pence coins shaped like squares in there. Nice batch of nickels
3. 70 bucks worth quarter rolls to finish my 1965 to 2007 set. Nothing special found there but one or two bu 2007 quarters. My books are full but I need lots p coins and not the d coins. In texas p coins are hard to find. I need p coins and not denver coins.
4. Last was an roll of dimes . Nothing was found there. I need the 2007 p dime to finish my set. It seems I never find going thru dimes.
Bank was out on 2 dollar bills, dollars coins, halves. So I did not get one of those. So I guess I will sell it and buy secord batch of coins to search. Maybe this time I will get an box of pennys to search becides bu coin box.
Have fun chevrolet

I've been searching rolls of halves lately and was wondering if it might be worth my while to start searching rolls of dimes and quarters for a change. Does anyone have a feel for the percentage of silver coins found per $500 searched--comparing dimes, quarters and halves?

I guess what I'm after is a number like:

average $5.00 worth of dimes per $500 searched
average $8.00 worth of quarters per $500 searched
average $2.50 worth of halves per $500 searched

Does anyone keep track of what they find like that?

Here is what I've done so far in halves:
40% = $2.61 per $500 searched
90% = $0.73 per $500 searched

I just searched $100 in half dollars. This is only my second time and I've searched $180 in total. I found a lot of space fillers for the two Kennedy Whitman's and my first keeper, an 82-S. It has been circulated a bit, but still fun to find! I'm still waiting on my first silver and by dubya's stats of under $3 per $500 searched, it looks like I have a ways to go!

Good luck searching everyone!

CPChicago--I've found the hunt to be either feast or famine when it comes to halves. You either find a bunch or nothing at all.

Where are you at in Chicago? I'm in the NW suburbs.

Happy hunting!

I hate when that happens. It takes the thrill out of the hunt. You can always pull a couple of rolls to save for another time but does absolutely nothing for the books. I've figured out that you have to ask the tellers for circulated boxes. Mine are fairly helpful but sometimes it's hard to tell (with the newer coins). I had a newer box of pennies but some of them had older pennies thrown in two. You could look at the side and see some darker coins in there.
Happy hunting!

Since my incredible trip a few weeks back, things have returned to normal. Three boxes of halves have yielded mixed results. The first was a total blank. The second had several 40%, a 90% Kennedy and a 2004 proof. The third had two 40% Kennedies and a few 200x coins.

Someone in my area seems obsessed with writing his initials on the halves with magic marker. Fortunately he has not ruined any worthwhile coins yet!

Since June 2007
halves searched = $2470
Walkers = 17
Frankins = 24
90% Kennedy = 2
40% Kennedy = 35
Proof = 4 (76, 82, 95, 04)

Well I'm back from vacation. No luck with banks at the beach. They didn't have any halves or dollar coins.

ludeboi121 - wish I worked at a bank. I'd pull out any star notes, silver coins, etc. I came upon and put them out of sight. Alas I work in medical IT. Course that saves my paycheck. I'd be putting 1/2 may paycheck in coins/currency that I found each week at the bank. You should keep an eye out for older customers that turn in change. Specially if they are in older wrappers. Those you may want to set aside and buy from the bank to search.

gee_dubya75 - you rubbed off on me. Was telling my local teller friend about your story as she was getting my $400 in coins. Guess what happened as I was going out the door? A bundle of dimes dropped and bust opened. I just had to laugh.

As for the dimes and quarters. I've just searched $200 in dimes and found 1 silver. Before that I searched $250 last month and found 1 mercury and 2 silver. So out of $450 I'm at 1 merc and 3 silver. Not great results. I also hate dimes due to the size of them. Is sometimes hard to get them back in the rolls. Quarters I've had mix luck. I've purchased $1000 in quarters so far plus some odd rolls here and there. One box was brand new State Quarter so just turned it back in after searching for errors. I've pulled a few silver but have not kept track. Mostly been getting the quarters for my daughter to search for State Quarters. I've been stuck on nickles for some reason the past month. I buy a box every week. So far I have over $18 in nickles I've pulled. I've made rolls of 1960-69 w/o 1964, and then pre-1960 rolls. I've finished one book and doing the older nickle book now. I find about one or two silver war nickles in each box.
