i have plenty of franklin silver half and liberty silver half. I'm guessing its much easier selling them off in rolls than in pieces?

I wish we had coin counting machines to use. I could then search more boxes then I do. As it is I keep loose coins handy to put back in rolls I search. Remove 2 coins, put 2 coins back in. That way I don't have to re-count each roll. I've asked every bank around but no luck.

Madmartigan - I've got the exact same scenario. I usually only end up doing a box of nickels in a week, but I'd go through a lot more if I had a coin machine to return them. It's not worth the 9% rate at the coinstar machines in the grocery stores. If I find a bank with a counter here in Toronto, then I'm opening up an account immediately!

I don't know why your guys's banks dont have coin counters. All my banks have them and even if you roll them for them they just break them open and throw them in the counter. Counters can be evil, too. I lost $8 due to a faulty counter at the Wells Fargo. Credit Union next time.

Ok, I'm still on vacation and I've already exhausted the local banks of all of their half dollars so I had to start reaching out further to find rolls. Called some banks and found enough rolls to make it worth my while. The small town mentality still holds true even when it is a tourist town. I went into a bank and bought all of their halves but I forgot to bring my canvas bag to haul them in. I was carrying about $270 worth of 'halves' and most of them fit in a small box that the bank gave me but I still had to cradle about 10 rolls as I walked out. As I turn around to leave, I jokingly say I hope I don't drop any. About two steps later a roll flops out and hits the floor and opens everwhere. Remember I have both hands full already so I can't just bend over to pick them up. I go back to the teller and drop everything on the counter and return to pick up the roll of 'halves' that opened all over the floor. As I stoop down to pick them up I realize that it is not a $10 roll of halves but a $25 roll of dollars--mostly Sac's and a couple of SBA . I'm thinking 'how in the world could the teller have gotten that wrong' but I guess I didn't notice it either. I'm just glad I dropped that roll cuz I would have been a little upset if I had to drive all the way back up there to return them. I guess I could have just mailed her the difference. Anyway I returned the roll and she just gave me my $10 back. Weird incident #1.

Now for weird incident #2. Stopped at another bank in the same town to buy another $310 worth of halves so I stopped at a National City bank. This place was very slow, very unorganized and very ineffecient but I was patient. I told the teller I would like to buy $310 of half dollars and gave her the cash. She had to send another teller to get them. After a bunch of riggomoro the gal showed up with the box of halves. The teller happily gave me the whole $500 box and basically told me to have a nice day . I'm thinking--'you've got to be kidding me'! At first I thought she was giving me the whole box ($500 worth) for $310. Then I thought that there is no way possible that this would happen twice in the same town on the same day. For about two seconds I thought that they must have pulled out their $190 and just gave me the rest. When I looked again, the tape seal had not been broken. I jokingly asked the teller if she would like her $190 before I left . She was like 'oh, yeah'. I'm thinking 'oh boy, you don't even have to be a bank robber in this town, they just give you money'.

Anyway, out of that $1000 I pulled out 18 - 40% halves so it was worth my drive. If you're thinking $270 + $310 doesn't = $1000, I know. I actually stopped at three banks and one of them actually got the transaction right. I guess if you're in the major league a batting percentage of .333 is pretty good .

Well my vacation is almost over so I guess I'll have to return to the boring city life.

Stopped yesterday and picked up $1000 in half rolls and checked them last night. One of my better finds. 23 40% silvers and 2 90% including one 1952 Franklin.

gee_dubya75,
I know what you mean about the coin counters. Back in my water park accounting days, we had our own coin machine that conveniently counted and sorted the coin. However, they are not always accurate. We always had to run the coin through 2 or 3 times to make sure the numbers matched.

Coins also got stuck a lot and sometimes they would come off the counting wheel and end up falling inside the machine (where it wouldn't be counted when the change was run through again). I would suggest making sure they always run your change twice (if that's possible). There are different kinds of counters and the banks near me don't have them so I don't know if they'll let you run them through twice or not.

Hi,

I have strange quastion why are proof coins found in bank rolls. It dont make sense why they would break up sets and spend the coins. We all know those proof sets cost lots money. How or why do end up there ?

I wish I had the extra money I would buy serval fed boxes of nickels and pennys to search them. Maybe next weak I can. I am going thru an tough time and have not searched coin rolls in over an monlth. I hope I can soon since I miss searching for coins.

The proof coins can be broken out of sets when they are stolen or when people who don't know what they are and change them in for face value. Often children or grandchildren will unknowingly cash in their grandparent's old stash. Sad for them good for us I guess.

Well over the past couple of months I have been pulling boxes of half dollars from alot of different banks in the area and have settled on picking the best producer and sticking with them for a while. Anyway I decided to open a savings account since I know someday they would probably cut me off if I didn't have one. I called around and found a branch that was on my way home and had either a full box of $500 or alot of loose. Well I opted for the bank that had the loose stuff this time and I'm glad I did. In the past I had the feeling that searching loose coins could either be 'feast or famine' and this proved it. My thoughts are if a bank has alot of loose halves its for one of two reasons: someone is searching boxes like me and is cashing them in this branch or they just slowly accumulate halves as they come in unsearched. Well yesterday was the latter. After I opened my savings account I went up to one of the tellers and asked if I could buy all of the loose halves that they had. She said 'yes' and went to grab the bag. On her way back she stopped and fished out a couple quarters, pennies and something bigger that sounded like silver when it hit the table. As she's doing this I'm thinking 'I hope she's not pulling out all the good stuff' so I ask her what she's pulling out. She replies 'just some odd stuff'. Nicely I tell her that my daughters and I like to look for the old 'odd stuff'. When she walks over to her window she's holding a Walker and a '64 JFK and thats what she saw laying on top. I told her that I would like to have those and she put them back in the bag. At this point I couldn't figure out if she was going to keep them for herself because she knew what they were worth or that she was pulling them out because they just didn't look like the rest. Anyway she had some more in her drawer that she pulled out and showed me (big misake) so I asked for those too never hurts to ask right? She put those in the bag too. I paid for the halves, thanked her and left. As I'm driving down the road I start thinking 'I wonder how many 40% and 90% halves are in this bag' if she was able to easily identify several just sitting on top of the pile. I can't resist so as I'm driving down the road I grab a handful and look them over. Each handful yields several silver coins. Keep in mind that I am putting the clad coins back in the bag each time I grab another handful. As soon as I get stopped at the next bank I resume searching through the bag. When it was all said and done that bag of $215 contained sixteen 40%, twelve 90%, and two Walkers . I think I just found my favorite bank and will be stopping in there regularly to talk with that teller. When she closed her drawer I know I heard more old coins shaking around in there

gee_dubya75 - oh man I about busted a gut laughing at your post. It's a good thing you are an honest person. If not that poor teller would of been short. I've had a situation like that but reverse happen to me a few weeks ago. I go to the same bank to get boxes of coins to search. I had walked out to my car with an arm full of stuff. I was about to drive away when I was like "duh - I forgot a box". Before I could walk back in the teller was calling me on my cell phone to tell me she forgot to give me a box of nickles. I was like ya, I just realized that and was at the door to come back in. We both laughed.

I go to the above bank exclusively now due to the one teller. I've said it before but the bank has great customer service. Amy (teller's name) pulls out any strange coins, even saves the foreign coins for me. I now turn in all of my coins to Bank of America since there tellers are the opposite. Tried to get some halves that a teller had out on display. She said sure, after pulling the silver out. Was told those were not for sale.
