Thanks to your combined efforts in helping me to learn a little more about the pennies, I am now saving all of my pre-'83 cents. I searched $5.50 in cents today and found a bunch of pre-82's, several 82's and 1 Canadian. No wheaties or other unfortunately. --- 82's can be either 95% copper or 2.5% copper. The only way to know for sure is to weigh them with the 95% copper coming in at 3.1 grams, the 2.5% copper at 2.5 grams. I am not sure if you knew that or not so sorry if I am stating something that you already knew about.
Also, I just got two boxes of pennies from my bank $25/each and 2500 coins per box. It was quite a project but I came away with 12 wheaties, 26 canandian pennies and out of the rest there was about 1547 copper pennies. The rest are going back to the bank this week.

Didn't find anything special today--two 57 and one 56 wheaties XF. A regular, who knows of my collection, purchased his coffee with a Halve for me today. It was a relatively nice 77 but I kept it anyway--its the thought that counts you know. I'm off tomorrow and plan on picking up a box of nickels and whatever halves my bank has lying around. I'll be sure to report in with any finds. Numi, I've heard that bank rolls will damage coins over time but I've never had any of mine get damaged in the few short years I've been rolling coins. I've been building quite a collection of spare circulated Wheaties and have been rolling them as I hit the 50 mark. I'm going to purchase a case of 100 plastic tubs (approx. $35) to store them in one of these days. I figure I'll buy a case every few months so I can store my rolls in nice neat boxes to keep them safe and in order. It's something to look into AS for cleaning, it all depends on what you plan on doing. If you're gonna try nad sell them for a profit--don't clean. If, like me, you have a worthless penny (lets say 1957) that's all dirty and unatractive in your books go ahead and clean it up, chances are nobody wants a crappy 57 wheatie anyway so why not have it look good? Some might call that blasphemy, but its whatever to me However, let's say you somehow stumble upon a 1916-D Mercury Head--I highly recommend letting it stay as it is. Somebody (me!) will be interested in a crappy 16D, but the market will considerably shrink if its got that polished, phony look to it. happy hunting, --Gary

Thanks for the help all of you have been offering. CH53562- You and GFR3 (and others) had given me a heads up on the copper % in the older and the newer pennies back on page 59. I appreciate it. I have since weighed all of my '82 cents. The weights came out mostly what you guys had said. 3.0 - 3.1 on the coppers and 2.4 - 2.5ish on the zincs. Seems there were some tiny deviations in a couple of them but I think they were close enough to determine which pile they belonged in :). I was pleased to find that I had considerably more of the coppers than the zincs. I went out yesterday and picked up a half dozen coin related books from my local library. Included among them are the '05 U.S. Coin Digest and an '01 Coin Collectors Price Guide. So, hopefully, I won't need to burden you guys with so many newbie questions in the future. Some of the info may be a bit out dated, especially the prices. But it will still give me a ballpark idea of what some stuff might be worth and so on. Seems to be alot of good info in them overall. You guys have any other suggestions on some good US or world coin books? As for any recent roll hunting on my part? Still waiting for Friday. I really like working with the half dollars for so many reasons. Not the least of which is they are easier to see. Hitting my mid forties hasn't been fun in regards to eyesight. I used to have 20/10 vision and now it's getting where I need some read'n glasses. Now that I'm searching coins it wouldn't hurt to get a stronger pair . Middle age can be bummer man lol!

Went through 100 rolls of nickels today and came up with 89 keepers, including 5 silvers, 2 canadians, 1 bermuda, an off-center 2000D (not major, but enough for me to hold aside) and a 1925 Buffalo! I got a couple more for my almost-full books and updated a few of my newer Jeffersons. No work on Friday...can't wait for another box or two

Had a very interesting day today. Stopped at my bank I get rolls on to check on the order of halves I asked them to order. I took in 2 small old style coke cups in filled with little chocolates. My one teller that always helps me laughed. The other teller / bus. rep (works in office and as teller) really started to laugh. I had harrased them both about not saving a roll of 1/2s the teller/rep had for me last week. I told them I'd bring them some chocolate in and she was joking with me "maybe should of done that first". Is what really got them both going today. Anyways, my normal teller said she saw a 1/2 in the drive drawer and got it for me along with some gold $1 coins. The teller/rep phoned her from her office saying she had a roll of 1/2 in her drawer. Boy did it pay off. That one roll of halves had 9 67, 1 68, and 3 69d coins in it. I was very happy.
Results from roll searching from weekend.
$32 in nickles searched - 39, 40, 51, 54d, 59d $40 dimes - 84 & 95 Canadian Dime, 64 dime $18 pennies - 42, 50, 53D, and 56. Canadian - 63, 81, 88, 2001, and 2002.
Time to cash in and get more change to search.

Searched $509.50 in Halves this evening. Found 3 90% and 9 40% all Kennedys. I've got another box waiting for me at the bank.
Can anyone give me a "reader's digest" condensed version of the "other than silver" Kennedys to watch out for. I know to look for Proofs and things like that, but what dates/mints should I be looking for? I haven't been able to fill either of the '87 holes in my book but I bet I found 25-2001 halves tonight.

of-grampa - Here's a topic on what to look for in halves. I've found it helpful and hope it will do the same for you. https://goccf.com/t/23986-Arthrene

I picked up the $500 box of halves at the bank this afternoon, along with an additional $94 in loose from some local banks. I went thru the loose first and found nothing at all. I've just opened the box and found $500 of 1996p fed reserve rolls.....nothing else.
Should I even open a roll or should I just dump these and move on?

of-grampa, Search the '96 or dump them as is. Depends on how you have to dump, do you reroll or use a coin counter? You could dump them at a bank you have no intention of getting halves at or they are easy to search if you use a coin counter. I once got a box where a full half was brand new 99d's, since I used a coin counter to dump I had no choice but to open every roll. Paid off for ME as I found this beauty. HH Mark
