You guys are killing me...I started the forum a few days ago and this thread caught my eye. So I have been thinking about going to a local bank and start coin hunting....

I'm past having the fever (as it was commented in another post)...I'm DREAMING about it!! Last night I had a dream that I got a roll from the bank and I was somewhere with my wife and family and I stopped to open the roll and look at my coins. It was a paper roll not a bankroll. There was one Kennedy, no date as I remember but it looked like a 90% silver in my dream....

My wife rolled her eyes when I told her...but she didn't say I couldn't...:)

Hey guys, I may have a problem and would like some input. One of the banks I use as a source for Kennedy half boxes told me yesterday that there is someone else who is now buying Kennedys from them. The problem is he is bringing the coins back to this same bank rolled. I usually get 1-2 boxes from this bank a week but I can see them not wanting to order fed boxes of halves when they have them customer rolled at their stations. Have any of you ran into this and what do you suggest?

Of-grampa:

I would find a new bank.

Or you can wait at the door when this someone coming and tell him/her "not to poop at the same place to eat".

In response to of-grampa:

You should definatley find a new bank, I would also suggest never get more than one box from the same bank, try to get boxes from two or three different banks. Personally, I don't buy boxes anymore, because I never had that much luck with them. I pick an area, call ahead, and find out which banks are holding, and then make a round. I have much better returns doing this, and I always drop off at my bank (which has a coin machine, so I don't even have to roll them, or deal with anyone).

Got some banks to pick up from tomorrow, hope I get lucky.

Walker, do you have accts at these banks, and if NOT, do you ask over the phone if they will sell them to you even if you aren't an acct holder?

Grampa, honestly, I would suggest to the person you order from that if the other person is buying them, and then returning them to the same place in rolls, the they simply hand him the same rolls he brought in if they ask for more again. I don't see why a bank would order coin for someone that just brings them right back to the same bank. I'm in a huge slump right now...can't seem to find anything good, and to make matters worse, I had to find a new job, and it's NOWHERE near my dump bank w/ a coin counter.

Well my bank is happy to order halves for me because my Company account, my personal savings account, and my personal checking account is with them. I would expect them to actually, even though they don't have to. They have been acting like they're happy to do this service for me and I certainly hope that doesn't end !

The tellers are great at this bank. I take them Ice Cream at least twice a month and they let me know if a customer cashes in halves when they come eat where I work. They save for me any foreign coinage they receive. I'm pretty sure they will work with me somehow on this issue. I plan on giving them my cell phone # and ask that they pass it on to the other searcher. Maybe I can get him to call me and I can give him this website while talking to him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed (well, not really crossed as I'm typing right now LOL but you know what I mean)

Just be careful you don't develope and turn the teller INTO A COIN COLLECTOR !.. ..Having coin collectors at a bank is devestating !.... for obvious reasons!......I've learned to play it pretty casual with what I'm excited by.....so they don't then decide to do it for themselves or their friends or something.
The silver half hunting thing is VERY contagious !
If someone there gets SILVER FEVER.......YOU'RE DONE !!..

Qoute:
"Walker, do you have accts at these banks, and if NOT, do you ask over the phone if they will sell them to you even if you aren't an acct holder?"

Sorry I couldn't answer sooner, I'm working night's right now, and it's killing my schedule.

In answer to your question, no I don't have accounts at most of these banks. I've found out that most of the banks are very happy to offload there halves. They don't use them, and every night that they sit in the vault, they have to be counted for nightly accounting. Most banks happily give them away. I have found a few that are anal, and won't talk to you if your not a member. RB centura is one of them. A few banks are 50/50, just depends on who you talk to. If you get halves from one Wachovia (for example), but can't get them at another, just call back on a different day, and hopefully you'll talk to someone else. You'll come across some busy or lazy tellers, that either can't or won't take the time to look. If you don't get a felling they even looked, call back on a different day, might very well be worth your 30 seconds.

As far as getting halves ordered, you have to have accounts at those banks. I also have trouble at a few banks trying to get large amounts of other coins if I'm not a member (i.e. pennies, dimes). Most banks are easy, and cheap (if not free), to open savings accounts at, and then your a member and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

I would say I have a 85 to 90 percent success ratio calling around, and I know exactly how much I'm picking up, and saving a lot of gas, and time in the process.

stats for yesterday:
went thru 50 rolls of pennies and ten rolls of dimes

5 1/2 rolls of copper
3 wheat pennies (40's and 50's)
3 3 cent euro's
1 old German Reich mark (not sure if I spelled that right)
1 united Arab emirates coin (?)
1 Canadian penny
1 silver 1964 dime

Happy hunting to all!

I just wanted to add that I am still new to this myself, any knowledge I have, I gained in the last three weeks of aggressive hunting (as much as my wife will let me anyway), and reading thru forums like this. I'm open, and would love to get any new, and useful info from the more experienced coin jockeys here.

I also wanted to get your opinions on copper penny hoarding. I have read what the fanatic's think, and I was curios to get some more opinion's from others. I personally have been putting mine aside, not for melting purposes, but to have in case the rest get cleaned out because of melting. Thanks again.

I tried coin roll hunting once for Kennedy halves, I had limited funds because I'm in college. At least I pulled out an AU 1982 P.

Being married, having two kids, and in the military, my funds are pretty limited to. I hate to admit it, but I have thrown a whole lot of uncirculated halves in to circulation, because I couldn't afford to keep them. When it comes down to keeping the uncirculated one's or the silver's, the silver's win every time.

If I brought a box of half dollars I'd probably get robbed in my dorm. The next night they'd probably bring them back however with a note saying something like "we thought we were stealing money, sorry!"
