I got the oddest box of pennies today. Nearly 1/3 of the pre-1982 coppers were defaced. Someone took either sandpaper or a grinder to the dates. The dates were etched up, but just cleaned up so you could see them better. Some of the dirty post-82 pennies had the same done to them.
Anyone have a clue as to why this was done? I'd figured I might find a few, but out of a box of $25 worth of shotgun shells about a third were this way.

I had assumed the same after the first couple, but to have so many in a box the same way. Rather odd. I'll have to pull some out after the weekend and post pics.
I just went to p/u another box of pennies. The bank only had $25, all handrolled. Must have been an oldtimer. 4 of the rolls contained all Wheaties. Most were from 1940-1945. A few from the 1910s. I haven't combed through looking for key dates or variations yet. I pulled about $12 worth of pre-82 pennies from them. There was about $6.50 in Wheats.
My best penny hunting so far.

Yesterday I looked through penny rolls for the first time in a while. In 32 rolls I found a 1928D, 1950D, 1942, 1957, 1957D and two 1951D wheats. I also found an 1875 Indian head! It was pretty sweet.

Bobbyjack, the best box I ever had was my first. I scored 62 wheaties and a 2000 Wide AM. I have been averaging about 10-15 per box. Also have been getting 1 2000 Wide AM in 3 of the 4 I have been through.

2 boxes of pennies from two different Wachovia branches. First box had 4 dimes, 2 wheats, 5 Canadian, and a 70-S, 71-S, 72-S, 74-S. Second box is halfway done and so far, two dimes, 3 wheats, 2 Canadian, 2 1998 Wide AM, 1 2000 Wide AM, and a 73-S. I'll be surprised if I get a 68-S and 69-S in the rolls leftover from box #2Got the 69-S and another 74-S, no 68-S Time to check the 74 issues for large/small dates!

Yesterday I searched through 34 rolls of pennies and I found a 1951-D, 1956-D, 1945-D, 1928, 1948-D, and two 1944-D wheats. Not too bad.
