I was in Arroyo Grande, CA the other day and picked up over $200 total in halves from several different banks. These were mostly customer-wrapped coins in a variety of different-style wrappers and some looked pretty old and grubby. I had high hopes but these rolls had already been picked clean. The only keeper was a single 1968-D silver clad. I think that one had been overlooked because it has a striped edge (from the clad layers) that makes it look like an ordinary Cu-Ni coin.
On the bright side, I checked my daughter's loose change jar and found a 1964-D quarter. That is the first silver quarter I've found in many years.

Went to a bank over the weekend to try and find some halves. The guy said he thought he had some, but he didn't. I mentioned I was a coin collector and the teller next to us said he had a bunch of "old silver dimes". I asked if he wanted to sell them and he said sure. He said a lady had just brought them in. He told her that they were probably worth alot more than face value, but she didn't care. I ended up with 73 mercs and 2 barbers. All for $7.50. It was a pretty sweet day.

i want to beat my local coin dealer with a stick... so I was in there today and a lady comes in with some foreign coins as well as a Buffalo nickel some Indian head pennies a Barber dime and an 1877 seated lib dime... he make her an offer for the whole lot, $3. so shes thinking about it and I offer her $2 for the two dimes so the guy gets out a book and says well that's a $14 dollar dime you should keep it. I was like what the hell man not cool. I'm not going back there again. I'm so mad at him

pulled a 1952 and 1964 dime out of 30 bucks in rolls yesterday. Got a 1941 quarter in 20 bucks in rolls. Got a large number of pre-1960 nickels in 60 bucks worth including a 1950 (not the D) and 3 silver wartime.

Nice finds on the silver! It seems that most people can't find silver in dimes or quarters anymore and you've hit some without going through too many rolls. You should go back to that bank and see if they've got more for you.

A recent roll of dimes had the white lining on one coin, but it turned out to be Canadian.

I haven't posted for a while although I have continued to get a box of halves every week. They still yield on average around 10 keepers, mostly 40% JFKs. BUT... this story I had to share. I was headed out of state so I decided to hit a different "dump" bank that was on my way. I had a big bag of halves to get rid of, so the machine almost immediately said it was full. The cashier came out to empty the bag and when she opened the machine I did my normal "peek in the bag" routine. There it was! I could see that familiar white shine of silver. With her permission, I pulled out a beautiful 1964 that was as close to BU as you'll ever see. When I went to replace it with one of my rejects, I pulled the edge of the bag back, and... SILVER! Lots of it. The cashier let me have the bag. Ready for this? 2 - Walkers (EF) 8 - Bens (G-F) 6 - 1966 (EF) 11 - 1967 (AU/BU) 1 - 1969 (AU/BU) 32 - 1964 (AU/BU) 60 coins in all! CHECK THOSE BAGS FELLAS!!

Ran another half dollar box from Brinks, 1 90% JFK, 1 40% and 1 2004 NIFC. Not terrible, but could be better.

I love roll searching. This year alone I have gone through 12 boxes of pennies. haven;t found anything exciting but my Canadian Collection sure did get a huge boost. lol I also bought two boxes of dimes and one each of quarters and nickels. Only found 2 silver domes, and nothing in either the nickels or quarters. Of course the Quarters where all Iowa State Quarters.... Regards, Stan

It was Commerce Bank. I don't think I could have bought the bag for paper money (maybe), but since I was trading halves for halves it was not a problem.

Hey Stan,
I enjoyed your John Wanamaker quote. Having been born and raised in Philly, I've seen how the rest of the world hasn't been clued in on how great of a man Wanamaker seems to have been, to his employees, customers and to this city, if not just to the business world itself.
Where would we be without a White Sale at our local department store without him?! :)
