After the good results I had with the last 2 boxes of nickels, I went back to the same banks and bought 2 more. Although not as good as the first 2 I did get 3 war nicks and a dateless buffalo from them. There was also some European stuff in the boxes, a welcome change from all the Caribbean stuff I was getting all summer. An '88 British Penny, a '66 50 Pfennig and this one,

Got a good box this week... got about 30 wheats out of it, including a BU 1952-D, and VG+ 1930-P, 1933-P, and 1917-D! I was absolutely astonished to get to the next box, and find my first Indian Head cent, an 1881! Probably rates an AG-3, but still... Also found a 1982 with a decent lamination error. Not as many wheats in this one, but I can't complain...

Picked up $550 in halves from a couples banks in a small town near me. From the $200 from the first bank, I found a '62 BF, a '64 JFK and 10 40%'s. I dive into the remaining $350 tomorrow.

started hunting about a month ago and am glad I did. It is a lot cheaper and more fun not knowing what you will find. I found this forum and did not know more people knew about doing this. I mostly look at nickles and pennies. Yesterday was my best find yet in nickles I got 20 dollars worth and began opening them. The first roll I got a 1926 buffalo and was excited and when I opened the next roll I could not believe to find another 1925 looked to be AU shape. I had to put that one in a 2x2. I also found a couple of silver war nickles. This has been the best day after searching about 500 dollars worth of nickles.

What made nickels one of my favorite types of coins was buying about $40 worth of nickels and having half of each roll be Buffalo (back in 2004). That was sweet!

I have always collected wheats. But in the early 2000's I was heavy into the silver coins (halfs,Qtrs, dimes). Now I only CRH getting my son involved. the Nickles and pennies wont make you rich but it is a fun and cheap way for my son and I. The earliest pennies I found this month were a 1919 and 1925.

Quote: I have never searched nickels is it really worth it? It depends on what your definition of "worth it" is. If you're just looking for numismatic finds, then yes. Buffalos and Liberty Heads can be found. So can the older Canadian nickels. I found a '45 Victory nickel a few months back. You're not going to find AU coins(at least not that often), but it is fun and cheap. Except for the '38D and '50D, I have filled my Whitman folders, all from CRH. Except for the war nicks, everything is EF or better. If you're just looking to try and make money on the silver war nicks and pre-82 Canadians, well, lets just say you aren't going to be making the mortgage payment anytime soon from the proceeds... That said, I am a metal hunter first, collector second. I do it more for the thrill of the hunt than the profit. What scant little there is... JMHO

I found a $1 Zimbabwe coin in a half dollar roll. I would be annoyed since it is only worth melt with the Zimbabwe inflation, but it is a coin from a country I didn't yet have.

Went through $350 in halves from the 2nd bank. Got 2 '64 JFKs and a '67. Visited some family on the coast over the weekend and scrounged $750 in halves from the local banks. Results: BUST.
Finished my $50 in cents a few days ago. Got 21 wheats, the oldest being a '28. I also found 2 Canadian King George 6th cents; 1938 & 1943.
