Got a box of quarters on Monday & found a dozen Bicentennials. $50 in nickels on Tuesday only yielded an Ethiopian coin and an extra nickel. yipee.

Hi folks,

I have read through the majority of this thread and have really learned a lot and appreciate the quality information available.

I am new to coin roll hunting. I started off, not knowing any better, with quarters. I haven't really found anything decent, none of the old silver quarters, and have just picked out some State Quarters to use for sets. It seems that the sentiment on here is that quarter roll hunting isn't worth the trouble? Can someone explain to me why? Keep in mind, I'm very new to this. Just looking to learn about the coins and do so inexpensively (by CRH). I don't really have any attachment to collecting a particular type of coin, but I have put together some stats quarter sets. However, based on what I've read here it seems like half-dollar hunting would be best to find silver. Thanks for any feedback about why quarter hunting isn't really worth the time versus why the other types seem to produce better/more valuable types of coins

theconductor- glad to have you on board the forum.

Quarter roll hunting rarely yields great results because, unlike halves, they circulate a lot and all of the silver has usually been plucked. By contrast, half dollar rolls sometimes can be found containing silver because once in a while old bank rolls from decades ago will be pulled from the vault and make one roll searcher quite happy. In addition, many non-collectors who discover that they have some old halves lying around will roll them up (not knowing that they are rolling up silver) and also turn them in at the bank rather than spend them individually.

Just keep in mind that one key facet of roll hunting relates to what kinds of coins circulate quite heavily and which end up being just thrown in the penny jar in the basement or in some drawer for years until rolled. This is also the very reason why wheats still show up. Ultimately you just have to hope that you hit it right and got the rolls that contain the coins that had been in some old lady's jar in the basement for fifty years.

I went through about $240 in halves the other day and found absolutely nothing, until I got to the last roll. Those were all common clads, except when I performed my "coin turn" to check the reverses one 1971-dated coin had a 100° clockwise rotation. For about 2 seconds I was stoked, but then I spotted the telltale reverse seam of a fabricated rotated die error. Someone had hollowed out the back side of a 1971 coin and shaved down another half to fit inside. They positioned the filler coin with the reverse in the rotated position. It was precisely done, but the seam is easily visible around the reverse rim. This is the second fake rotated die half I've found while roll hunting.

There are actually 4 different indicators that this is a fake and not a genuine (and valuable) rotated die error:
1) The visible reverse seam.
2) The weight: a normal clad half weighs 11.34 grams; this one is about 10.8 grams.
3) The "ring": if you drop this coin on a table it mades a dull thudding sound. There is no ringing sound like you get with any normal coin.
4) The reverse is clearly not a 1971. I've seen enough Kennedy half dollars to know that on the 1971 coins the eagle is struck in relatively high relief. Detail is often soft, but the bird is three-dimensional. This coin has the low-relief reverse that you see on coins from the mid-nineties.

Anyway, it's a "fun" find, but I'd really rather have found just one 1964 silver!

I have a question for the half dollar hunters out there.

For the 1971, 1977 half dollars, how do I determine if they are 40% silver or not? Is there an easy way to determine this?

Thank You for any help

I like to search through mainly halves but I've only found a few silver ones. Sometimes I'll go through quarters but the only thing I usually there is some foreign coins.

My ist post here.

The 40% halves are going to be 65-70 only.

I went through 17 rolls yesterday and found 3 40% silvers.
The bank I got them from has many more old wrapped halves, so I'll be back.

On Monday I got my box of halves and found a '64, a '67, and a '92S. The '67 was peaking a me out of the end of a roll. On Tuesday I finished going through my monthly $50 in cents. I only got 9 but one was a 1909 Lincoln, the first one I ever pulled from circulation.

Today my wife and I decided to do some shopping for the holidays. I called all the banks we would be passing and located 6 rolls. Two banks each had a roll while the last four came from one bank. The first two rolls yielded nothing, but the last four coughed up a '64 and 39 40%'s, the best results I've seen in months.
