I picked 1909-S VDB cent because it seems like it would be hard to get.

Any of the top 3 or a nice (OLD) US gold coin.

If it were me, I'd be right on Snooba's heels for that Uncirculated 1938 Crown, or a nice Shield Sovereign. But you're not me.
From your list, I'd go for either the Buffalo or the Dime. They're both genuine rarities, and I'd like to be able to hold the coin in my hand and think, "There really aren't very many of these, and I have one." The S-VDB isn't all that scarce; just pricey due to demand.
Of course, I know nothing about notes, so if one qualifies by that criteria, it could be on the list.
The more important question is, though, what do you like? Do you have a specialty that could use a boost from owning a Key? Something that you've always dreamed of owning? Since this is a sizable amount of cashola to be sinking into one coin, I think you should answer your heart as well as your head, and not buy something that will bore you to own in the long run.

Yeah what SuperDave said! At the end of the day you want a coin that you can be proud of.

That's a tough one Tim. If you could double your investment I'd go for a nicer 1909S VDB. That's just me though because I want to replace the one that my Mother had stolen from her collection. In reality, I'd spread the investment around a bit and go for the gold - Sovereigns, U.S. AGE, Panda's or just stick with the .9999 Canadian or Krug's. I hear that Canada is coming out with a .99999 Gold this year so maybe you would want to wait until then. I know that waiting is difficult!
Do let us all know what you decide!

I voted for the 1909 S VDB. 2009 is right around the corner and with the 4 circulating designs the mint is going to put out, the 100th anniversary should spark more interest in this series. I am hearing predictions of the 1909 S VDB being in much more demand.

Im a little different and would have voted other !!
although you have listed several key dates they are always around and available for purchase.Keeping in mind that grade is equal to value with them.850.00 will not buy the quality that these should be bought in to capitolize on them.
My thought is that I would turn the 850 into around 1300.00 .
I would do my home work and purchase several coins for resale. Before I purchased for my own collection ,, just in this thread I have seen several coins which that could happen with !!!

I picked the 1916-D dime because I have always wanted one.... but it would be very close between that and a $20 St. Gaudens gold coin which I like more and more every time I see one.

I would go with the Wisconsin quarters....only because I think your money will go farther.

I don't think I would want to spend it all on one coin. I'd get my first GSA Morgan, a US Trade dollar and a couple of foreign proof sets that I've been looking for (Jamaica & BVI).

Well, my official vote was for the Buffalo gold, but I think either of the currency pieces would be just as good

Probably the 09-S-VDB cause it's the last coin I need to complete the set ;)
