If there's no mintmark, what does that mean? A few out of over 300 that I just went through have a D or an S, but most are blank.

The Philadelphia mint did not use mint marks on Mercury dimes. The only started using them on clad Roosevelt dimes.

Either they are from the Philadelphia mint or they were worn off.

That's a good point - the mintmark location on Mercs is vulnerable to circulation wear.

Thanks for the info, guys. Yeah, the first several I picked up were pretty worn in that area and I even said outloud to myself "What a dumb place to put the mintmark!" But then I found some that were in really nice condition on the back and I couldn't see one there either. So P explains it! Is it that way on most coins? If there's no mint then P is the culprit? Or can it be D or S depending on the coin type/date?

no mint mark indicates the philly mint on all of the early coin denominations ,,including the early proofs.

the Jefferson War Nickels were the first coin to bear a P mint mark . today's clad coins will have a P mint mark .
