Carus AE Antoninianus. IMP CM AVR CARVS PF AVG, radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVGGG Carinus or Numerian receiving Victory from Carus, officina letter below - Delta, XXI in ex. Sear5 12190. RIC 125. Minted in Antioch, February - March 283 AD.

Antoninianus, 3.4g, 20.37mm

This is the first of three coins that I purchased from Eddop for a decent price. This is also my first Carus coin. I have a three coin set of Carus, Carinus and Numerian. Apparently, Carinus and Numerian were Caesars, but became Augustus during the time these coins were issued. Eddop knows more about it than I do.

I have sort of a backlog of coins to post. Because I am going through a fairly bad back injury. Not sure how it happened, but I passed out and fell on the floor. A friend of mine found me with the door wide open, screen door locked. I was then rushed to the hospital and was there for awhile. It totally sucked because of the pain I was in and I also had to learn how to walk again. Currently, I am slowly gaining strength, not to mention going through many tests to figure out what is wrong. No explanation on the passing out. All the tests they've done has turned up clean. Next test is a bone density test. Although, the injury is four compression fractured disks in my spine. My ribcage also moved a bit and I have pain there as well. Getting better, slowly.

Now that I can sit at my desk, it's a good time to start my hobby up again. Well, another setback was the fact that I lost $31 on two orders of coins. The seller said he would give me a refund. We'll see. Although, I'm fairly certain it isn't his fault. I've purchased coins from him in the past and received them safely.

I have one more coin from JW that I am going to purchase later.

The matter of the GGG reverses is not very consistent. The GGG appears while the two sons were still Caesar (Numerian below) so the plural really indicates that there are a total of three rulers even though only one of them is Augustus. There are many examples of the Romans using a double letter to mean more than one but relatively few triples meaning three (or more). There are many times that three would have been appropriate where they used only two. GGG is mostly limited to this era.

That's certainly interesting information. Thanks.

I have two more to post of this set. The Carinus and Numerian coins are in fact Caesars, according to the legend on the obverse.

Let's make two rulers Augustus..... it's confusing. Carinus as Caesar and Augustus, Karl Pink means the Carinus AVGGG as Augustus is a hybrid. It's possible but more Antioch officinae minted this coin with the Augustus title.
All toughts about this are welcome.

Ed

Gil-Galad good luck with your recovery.
