Quote: Unfortunately the 82 and 83 have the same Obverse and reverse die so you cannot pick it out from that. But the 1883 date logotype is much wider than the 1882. His coin has an 1882 logotype.

Very nice collection, Dooly. Glad to see people outside of the US interested in collecting them.

A picture you may like to see it shows all three without rays hubs used on the Shield nickel IIa IIb and IIC overlay to show the approximate positions of each in relation to each other .. there are problems with this I know .. thousands of different dies were used in there production and the 5 may also not always be in the same position .. but you may find it intresting

Nice 68 find Been a little quiet of late finding stuff for my collection just waiting for this one to come from the USA .. nice and cheep but I think it has been "environmental" effected . but in that grade for the price I can live with it In the past it has been estimated that these turn up at a rate of 350 to 1 .. which would mean that only 3-4 dies were used these are classed as less common than the "normal" date types so I went through Heritages past sales and there was 198 MS 1869 and there was 17 Narrow date coins .. but at least 2 were the same coin re-holdered so only 15 ND out of 198 so about 21.7% so out of the total mintage of 16,395.000 it works out (if my maths is correct) at 3,557,715 narrow dates were possibly produced and with the working die rate of 21,000 would work out at 169.41 dies used ? pictures of some of the coins from heritage

Thanks. When I bought it, the picture didn't show every little flaw, just the rim Cud, so everything else was a pleasant surprise

Great thread dooly,
I am wondering why this series never pick up popularity here in the states, that is a very interesting collection and analysis.
