Since I found this site I have been impressed both by the expertise of the community and its willingness to share that knowledge. Now I draw your attention to this Newfoundland 50c. These pictures were the best I could produce under poor lighting conditions; I realize they may not be ideal for grading. It's an attractive piece with wonderful luster, especially on the reverse. I look forward to your input. Thanks!
The 6 vertical beads at the center, top of the crown is where I always look first for wear on any KG V coin. They always seem to wear quicker than any other spot. I am seeing some readily apparent wear in this spot. Next I'm looking at the band of the crown and specifically at the second set of beads from the front of the crown. These appear to be showing some wear, although sometimes a weak strike will mimic wear in this area. After checking the above trouble spots I don't need to look farther to knock this coin from MS status and even AU grade. My best estimate is EF-45. Nice coin.
I think the photos are obstructing this investigation.. I'll try this game again when I have better lighting. The beads are washed out in the above images.
Grade and eye appeal are right for a 58. Send it to NGC and see if they will give their favourite grade to this as they do many others ...........................MS62 !! Clearly not a mint state coin from the scans!
