Actually, if I recall correctly, me and my brother used to collect any old nickles we found. Only years later did I realize some had silver content.

One, in a roll I was putting in our coin changer at work--1944-S (actually, up til that picture earlier in the thread, I had no idea there were War Nickels with other mintmarks). One of my regular customers walked in while I still had it in my hand with my jaw unhinged (I've never been in a position where I literally couldn't close my mouth before!) and had a good laugh before he saw it. Then he got all excited because he collected as a kid.

. . . oh, and reason for that expression? I'd only discovered such a thing existed three weeks before I found it. I'd expected to be searching for months, if not years.

(And I say this totally counts as pocket change, because the maximum amount I ever get to put in the coin changer is about forty bucks a day--MAXIMUM. Keep in mind that's spread across nickels, pennies, dimes, and quarters.)

I got one in change for buying a 15 cent washer. I was pretty happy that a trip to the hardware store turned a small profit.

Some lady just came into the gas station to buy a bottle of water for $1.08 and one of the nickels she gave me was a 1943-P! I'll post a pic when I get off work

I had lunch at Hardees yesterday and I did not receive a War Nickel in change however, I did receive a very nice Buffalo nickel. That was the first Buffalo nickel I ever got in change.

Only 2 ever in change, really dirty ones that looked like regular dirty worn nickels and were only revealed as War Nickels by looking at the date and mintmark on the back. 7 of them from roll searching.

I got one years ago and didn't know what it was. I was not into coin collecting at the time; I just threw it into a jar along with all of my other "old" coins.

When I started cataloging my coins, I looked at it and thought, "That's an odd place for a mint mark. I wonder if it has any significance?"

So I went on Google and found the answer. "Oh so that's what a War Nickel looks like."

I'd say 4-5 over the past two years which equals the amount I've gotten in change over the previous 30. About two weeks ago I found one on the floor right in front of the teller when doing my banking! I'd never seen money on the floor at a bank before in my life and certainly not a silver coin.

I swapped my register for 2 in the past month. I guess its not getting them in change, but someone would have! They are the only 2 I have, I only just started collecting.

Unfortunately, with my fast paced job I don't get to look at them for long, so I usually look that the old looking ones first, so I will never get great condition coins from it unless I get really lucky.
