Hello everyone, I have been wanting a republican denarius for some time now and jumped on this one because the price was right. I have no idea who is on the obverse other than what the seller listed (Genius of the Roman people) and I would love to learn more. The seller listed this one as "SILVER DENARIUS OF CORNELIUS LENTULUS FROM 76 BC." The size is 18.9 mm and 3.66 grams. Syd 752 Sear 323 Craw 393/1a Edited by w00zi 06/17/2012 6:26 pm

The obverse resembles Greek likenesses of Poseidon. Compare to this depiction of Poseidon on a Greek Sicily coin. Nice Republican coin!

I know little about Republican coins, a lot of then seem a bit dull to me but this one is very nice. It does look a little Greek.
I think the reverse is Globe between wreathed sceptre and rudder, EX-SC

Quote: Emperor, Bob Marley That's pretty funny . Is it a hat on his head or is it his hair?

The ID as Genius comes from the letters G PR (Genio Populi Romanorum) above the head mostly off flan on yours. Lentulus was an associate of Pompey involved in the wars in Spain. EX SC suggests the silver for the issue was provided by the state rather than from personal funds. It is a most decent example.

Yep, it's one of these. The portrait is of the Genius, or Spirit, of the Roman people. Genius was more of a personification, rather than a god, though there were still often temples to the local Genius in various cities in the Empire, including Rome. Wikipedia. And that's his hair, not a hat. The hair is tied back with a diadem (cloth ribbon).
