The Great Purple Hairstreak is a North American butterfly that, although much smaller, rivals the coloring of what many consider the world's prettiest blue butterfly, the Morpho (not North American). Both of these have an incredible, blue, metallic sheen to their wings. Do a google image search for each.
Also, there is a whole family of smaller butterflies in North Americas that are called "Blues." Many are quite pretty.
