@RED (and anyone else who would be interested) - If you want a better platform to organize things that is specifically geared towards studying counterfeit coins, I could always set up a UK section on The Black Cabinet and give you Contributor access. See the link in my signature. :-)

RED - If you would like the coin for your collection just send me a PM. I offered to send you some examples in a previous thread but you didn't respond, I know it sounds strange for somebody to offer up coins " gratis " for your collection but I don't collect them and basically throw them in a box along with all the others and at some point I will just cash them in. If you want a few of them contact me

If you come across a 1988 Shield Fake i'll gladly pay (£5 + Post) for it, otherwise I'm good thanks :) Got enough to try and wittle down to a decent size as it is My final goal once the new pounds come out and the current ones are fizzled out is to have a framed 'set' of fakes, preferably a nice selection of doubles (So I can show obv and rev)... Something like this... except I have 14 different reverses at the moment, so will probably have to make something up myself.

There should really be a wiki on this, or at least the British ones. But I don't know how to start one up.
RED, I hope you'll keep all the less common ones. E.g. the Third Portrait series that appear to contain silver. Looks like you have a few of those, assuming they aren't error coins.

That last one shows signs of damage caused by being in a drain or in the ground. They turn up occasionally in change - I'mguessing someone knew this was fake and try to dispose of it, only for it to be found and spent by someone else.

In case folks miss the thread, https://goccf.com/t/226828, There's a large amount of fake 2015 Royal Navy £2's doing the rounds in and around Wales, concentrated in Swansea and surrounds. Found 12 so far, most on ebay, and two from the thread above, with a couple on facebook. I've got some folks looking out for some. They're easy to spot if you know what to look for, for a start they're a mule coin, using the obv from the Magna Carta, the queens head and ship/water is frosted "proof-like" and there's no lettering on the edge of the coin where the motto should be.

Hi RED,
I'm really interested as to what you can observe as to whether the artwork and lettering are facsimile images of the real thing or imitation/re-engraved? Is it only the frosted parts that are facsimile images and do they show any re-touching also? The Queen's portrait looks like they've taken the previous standard re-engraved image (as on some earlier bimetallic fake £2) and added to the septum, but the nose is still too long and the eyes too pronounced.
Regards

Well now I see more differences on the obverse vs. Royal Mint: the text veers closer to the outer dots esp. around the top, and the font is more stylised/like medieval manuscript, with notches at the top or bottom of some characters e.g. the P. You might say, even more Magna Carta themed than The Royal Mint's.

and on reverse both W's too high, A too low and whole caption not Roman enough type.

What I originally thought was that they'd simply used the images from The Royal Mint website, inputted into a CAD machine, that created the dies (This would explain how the mule has been made, as there was no obverse picture on The Royal Mint website for quite a while due to the change in effigy) You certainly have an eagle eye... here's the only pic of the possible fake from Northern Ireland we have... Once I get one in hand (insert optimism here) i'll be studying it in detail, taking close-up pics and getting dimensions and weights. i'll try take a good picture of one of my stylised obv portraits in a bit and compare

Oops... never got round to comparing it to another fake, but did make this.. and there are a lot of differences as you noted MC The portrait is weird... overall less detail (Note the brow, around the eyes and particularly the ear) and yet look at the hair behind the ear, more detail and yet an inconsistency as shown by the shadows The W in TWO and the U in POUNDS are both out of sync. Maybe I should compare it to a Magna Carta obv huh... lol Anyway while I'm here.... what do you guys make of this one... Fake or not ? Obv and rev match perfectly, design and motto matches, but as noted in the image the weight and size is off. Note the apparent (internal) damage to the letters D E & S in Decus, E in Et and TU in Tutamen Normally I'd say it's just had a hard life but some of the inconsistencies are inside the cavity of the letters which couldn't have happened due to bashing about, plus it's not in that bad condition considering it's been in circulation for 27yrs!! (THIS is why I want other opinions... because this is one I WANT to be a fake so badly !!)

I must say those fake £2 look pretty darn fascinating... wouldn't even consider them fakes until I'd see the edge. I'd definitely pass them on as real ones if I wouldn't keep them because they look so fresh.
