I had a few. My favourites, like the one made of lead and painted gold, or the one from the wrong mix of metal and silver in colour I've kept with a few of the 'worst' ones.

The trouble is, as far as I know, if you present them at a bank and say you think it's dodgy, they will just say thank you and you've lost £1, so there's no incentive to get rid of them.

Many I've picked up came from smaller corner shops. I have also heard that you can get them regularly from taxi drivers, but I don't travel by taxi much, so can't substantiate that.

I guess eventually they will pass through banks and be destroyed and the few left will remain as numismatic curiosities, like the George III evasion pieces and so on ..

I have heard there are fake 20ps around, but have never spotted one. I did find this though:

Fake-£1

A fake 50p. Odd edging and lighter than it should be. Plus the colour is wrong.

Is it sad I find such a thing exciting?

Oh wow , thats amazing a fake 50p ! I have never seen or heard of one prior to seeing your sample .......speaking of the wrong color I got a fake 1983 pound today at the supermarket and its coloring was odd , the letters on the date were a bit weak but everything else was very good ....

I find that Superstores and garages are good places to get A LOT of fakes from .....

DaytR - it was a pretty good fake but clearly not a real coin. Another bridge series one - find a lot them here. The edge was really deeply struck and had distorted the coin a bit. Nothing special so I didnt want to keep it. I got it at a fast food place They gave me a look when I glared at it in my hand but didnt seem to judge me when I refused it. It went back into the register and is still in circulation today.

They should redesign it like our new loonies - add a nifty hologram thing (like in the middle of the 2-pound piece I think?). Are those hard to fake? I'm not very up on counterfeiting trends...

I've only ever come across three fake two pound coins.
They're all a single metal type/planchet , with the nickel-brass outer being painted gold.
One is possible cast, as there is what appears to be a sprue/cast mark where the + should be on the edge inscription.

I only have photos of one of them at the moment, but will take some photos of the other two soon.

They managed to fake them on £20 notes (& 100 Euros) so probably not that hard...

No, those little ridged bits in the middle of the coin that show a design depending on how you tilt them.

Those holograms on 2 pound coins are quite visible on new coins but if you get a 2 pound coin that has been in circulation for a while it will be hard to see it properly as the hologram scratches and damages easily over time.......all a forger has to do is make a coin that looks liked it has been in curculation for a while then add a less than half decent hologram and it probably will probably pass ...

Thanks for the link marz, that is a very interesting story - I really liked this quote: "The pair were released, however, on appeal thanks to the perfect irony: detectives had made a printing error ..."

I nearly choked on my cornflakes !

My mother works as a betting shop manager, so handles cash all day, every day.
Anything unusual she puts in the bottom of the pile for me to look at when I pick her up.
She thought she'd found another fake 10p yesterday, but turns out it was a VERY weak strike !
