Poll Question
Just curious what everyones bigger ebay pet peeve is. I cant stand auctions with reserves, waste of everyones time. And last night found a coin Id been looking for with a BIN or 150. Had the best offer option so I made a couple offers, all were immediately rejected. For the fun of it my last offer was 135 and that got rejected too. Whats the point of a best offer if you wont even look at any offers at all? My other big ebay pet peeve is sellers who charge for priority shipping then ship regular mail to overcharge you for it, but I didnt include that since everyone would probably pick that

Yep, I would have picked the overproced shipping, but since that is not available...hmmm...Reserve Auctions.

Any auction that has a reserve I don't even bother bidding anymore, as I feel it is wasting my time. I used to bid on reserve auctions and would be top bidder many times (and my bid would sometimes even be much high than it was bid up to), but never won an auction with a reserve. In some cases I would get an email from the seller saying what the reserve is and whether I was interested at the reserve price.

If the price was still good from an email like that I might take the deal. Most of the time Id imagine my response would be that I am interested at the price I bid if the seller wants to accept that

Yeah, the reserve auctions are a complete waste of time for not only me, but for the seller as well. Typical reserve auctions actually meet the seller's price maybe, .5% of the time!

Can't say that either of these practices bother me much; I don' t really see a problem with a seller putting a starting bid or reserve on their wares, to make sure they get some sort of minimum return on their investment. I guess the minimum bid would be better, as you can see what it is. I see lots of threads that intimate being a seller can be a tough road to hoe, so whatever helps them out. Same with the BIN and Offer; just move on if it's not to your liking, plenty more for sale, for sure!

They certainly arent the worst things sellers can do, which is why its my pet peeve instead of something Id be taking action on. And ebay is buyer friendly it can suck selling sometimes for sure, but like you said just start the minimum bid there. Same with the BIN offers, if there is a reject level set post what offers will be immediately rejected. ' I dont think its underhanded or dishonest by a seller by any means, just a complete waste of every ones time to have theses types of listings and frustrating to figure out that you just wasted your time on it.

I agree w/ JackB regarding the reserve price. Dealers have to make some type of profit or it's not worth selling. I have made offers that were declined and a counter-offer to buy was made. I have also made offers that were 10-20% less than the asking price that was accepted. It's all in how the offer is set up by the dealer.

Reserves don't really bother me. I've had sellers that changed their mind and send me Second Chance Offers in instances where the auction ended and I was the high bidder, but didn't meet the reserve. I've scored some good deals this way. Granted, it doesn't happen very often though.

Quote: Dealers have to make some type of profit or it's not worth selling. I agree with this 100%. That said though why not give save everyone the time and list it for what they need to make their money or start the bidding at their lowest accepted value instead of starting something at 99 cents that clearly wont sell for anywhere near that and wasting everyone time till the reserve is met?

When you have multiple bidders on a specific auction it appears there is high interest in the coin and draws more people to look at it. When the bidding is still low, it gives one hope that your bid will win

I really hate it when you place a Best Offer and is instantly rejected....
At least with the Reserve Auction, you can bypass them and bid on other items.

Personally, I don't have a problem with either of these things.
Reserves: which would you rather have, an honestly set reserve price, or a shill bidder bumping you up to an unannounced reserve price?
Offer rejection: I suppose sometimes people are just curious about what people would actually pay for an item (or are wondering what price to ticket it off-eBay), so they put a super-high BIN price on it and see what the punters try to offer them. If some sucker actually clicks the BIN button, well, all the better. I'm not a haggling type personality so I never make offers myself; if the BIN price is too high I just move on to the next.
And again, which would you rather have: someone who rejects your offers immediately, or someone who holds onto all their offers, waits for who knows how long, then conducts their own secret mini-auction, treating the offers as bids and maybe accepting the offer from the "highest bidder"? At least with an immediate rejection you know you're not going to get it unless you hit the BIN button.

When I have made an offer on the coins that I was interested in, I usually get a counter-offer...and the haggling continues.

Sap some interesting questions for sure Quote: Reserves: which would you rather have, an honestly set reserve price, or a shill bidder bumping you up to an unannounced reserve price? I wouldnt mind reserve prices as much if the price was published. Personally I dont mind shill bidding, I dont like a price being run up on me, but it doesn't change what I'm willing to pay for it. If they shill 1 to many times I'm out. I bid last second anyway so its impossible for me to tell if that happened. Quote:
And again, which would you rather have: someone who rejects your offers immediately, or someone who holds onto all their offers, waits for who knows how long, Id certainly rather have the offer countered or rejected right away but if they wanted to wait a day and see all their offers then accept what they wanted thats fine with me. Unless its a trusted seller that I've dealt with before if they tell me someone else offered this much and ask if I would like to raise my offer I am not changing my offer just because I wont believe them. I certainly understand the not wanting to sell things and only be willing to for a high price, but if thats the case why use the Best Offer feature at all? Wouldnt it make more sense to just list a BIN and nothing else then?
