I was looking through a local junk silver box, of coins that will be sent off to be melted. I have been watching out for Newfoundland coins. I like that they are low mintage. I pulled this one out to check on it price, but I am thinking with the hole it has only silver value. Sort of sad that a coin with a mintage of 200,000 has no value but silver .. even with the hole.

True. Although I have seen holed coins go for more than their silver value if they're rare enough and the demand is high enough.

Still a cool coin. Did you get it for around the melt price?

Quote: Still a cool coin. Did you get it for around the melt price? On this coin, I saw it in the melt box at one of the coin shops I help out at. So I ask to take it home over the weekend to check it out .. I do not have a Canada price guide at work. I plan on putting it back in the melt box on Monday

I think it's worth saving, alone for the fact someone thought it was valuable enough to sew to their clothing. I would not consider that hole typical PMD like most would. That hole is historically significant. Save the coin, it's a bargain.

DO not save this piece a nice Fine is available for a touch over silver value. Holed coins are nothing but a damaged coin and when you go to resell you will get 80 to 90 per cent of melt from a reputable dealer.

That's cold, that coin is over a hundred years old, and only ~200,000 minted.
I guess if it's all about resale...then I can't argue with that. There are nicer coins for the silver value.
Sure the hole sucks, but what are you going to do. I don't see why the coin HAS to be destroyed.
There is more to history then numismatics. I would like to think that given enough time the coin would appreciate in value.
It would make an interesting piece of fractional bullion for a history buff.

Spend a little more and get one with out the hole
Sorry to say .. I will be putting this one back into the melt box.
I guess it could make the ones that are left worth a little more

And at the end of the day we are all here for profit apparently.
"Newfie 48cent pieces ROFL" spoken with true arrogance. Newfoundland was an independent dominion then, 40 years before joining Canada. These are not your typical coins. FYI Bullion is measured by weight, not face value.
I agree you can do whatever you want, so get out there and destroy the thing for your own coin might go up 48 cents.
Clearly if you read my post I'm about not destroying the coin, I could care less if he buys it and agree that he can find better examples for the money.

Spoken with true arrogance , boy are you off the mark! Don't try to tell a Newfoundlander like myself about the history of the "Rock". It was meant with a touch of humour! Hate to see how worked up you would get over a bent five cent silver used to set fishing lines! ! PS when you put a hole in a fifty cent coin that size it probably does have a face value of 48 cents ! Have a nice day and enjoy yer meds!

OK, now this all makes sense.

I do not think insulting ones heritage is fair game on here! I will let you have the last word though as all you are looking for is an argument. Obviously there is a hole involved here that does not match the one on this junker Newfie half. !

You are a very immature individual. Seriously, your mad because I don't agree with your view? Are you from the Newfoundland mint?
Alas, the jig is up. You have exposed my master plan to insult the fine citizens of our most comedic province.
Now how am I supposed to work my derogative agenda into a coin forum?
Some will never get to hear things like...
You know you are from Newfoundland when: -You have more miles on your snowblower than your car. -You live in a house that has no front step, yet the door is one meter above the ground. -You know 4 seasons - Winter, Still Winter, almost Winter and Construction. -The local paper covers national and international headlines on 1/4 page, but requires 6 pages for local softball scores. -Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled in with snow. -You have 10 favourite recipes for bottled moose. -You owe more money on your snowmobile than your car. -Canadian Tire on any Saturday is busier than the toy stores at Christmas.
Nor will we ever get to learn just what happens when a dessert stranded Newfie, Quebecor and a Torontoian each get a wish from a Genie?
