A simple, VF-ish (not graded, except mentally by me, but in a 2x2) 1841 large cent (mintage just under 1.6 million) I bought for just over $30 in an antique shop (it was right there on the main shelf, among a bunch of $20 Mercury dimes... I discussed whether I should buy it or not for three months but it still remained; as for the dimes, they were still there last time I checked, well over a year later - in fact there were hardly any visible changes on the main shelf at all). I have some rarer world coins in terms of mintage, the rarest having 30 thousand; however, I have suspicions that there are less surviving 1841 cents than that (anyone has a decent estimate?), while most of these "rarer" coins are recent commems and likely have survival rates approaching 100% (i.e. most of the mintage is still around).

I don't collect proofs myself, but that 1869 makes me think about getting at least one proof seated.

I have been looking at buying a Seated Liberty Proof lately (Most likely a quarter). Beautiful coins.

As Homer Simpson would say: ARGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Drooling is not enough, Small Eagle, hyper ventilating more accurately describes my response. TOO beautiful for words.

I'd have to go with my 1864 Small Motto proof Two Cent Piece. Mintage is estimated at 100. Myron Kliman in his book The Two Cent Piece And Varieties estimates a proof survival rate of 62 1/2 %. There are currently 20 known Small Motto proof coins from 1864, that would leave approximately 43 large motto proofs.

Thanks everyone :) I'll have to take a picture of my R6 1808/7 $5 in AU58 (20-30 exist) at some point as well. Early gold is definitely my favorite!

Mine is probably an 1865 3-cent piece. I'm new to collecting, so I am not sure if it's rarer than my others... P.S.- First post on CoinCommunity!

In the March 2006 Penny-Wise Dennis Fuoss did some good work on estimating large cent survivorship using a couple of different methods and came up with a survival rate of the 1840's cents of between .56 and .74% so for 1841 between 8,945 and 11,820 pieces.

My rarest is a 200-S proof Jefferson nickel. Only 3,184,606 were minted according to the Red Book. I got it from coin roll hunting last month. I have a few classics, but they're relatively common, at least when compared with some of the ones you guys have.
