I noticed recently that the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) had released a commemorative 50-cent coin in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Australian Ballet. (Here's a link to the RAM website for those who are interested:
http://mintissue.ramint.gov.au/mint...?code=210116 It made me think about the commemorative silver dollar issued back in 2001 by the
Royal Canadian Mint (
RCM) to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Ballet of Canada.
I'm not much of a ballet aficionado, but I've always thought the Canadian coin's design was an interesting blend of a 2D line drawing (the dancers in the background) and a fully sculpted 3D presentation of a pair of dancers in the foreground. The design is the collaborative work of Scott McKowen and Susan Taylor.
The coin was struck in sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper), and is available in proof and brilliant uncirculated strikes. A total of 89,390 proof and 53,668 BU coins were struck.
