I just received the Lighthouse stand. The CamApp that came with the camera only allows me to zoom properly at close range. Can't get the entire picture of a nickel.
Anyone knows other software that might work with this ?
Thanks

The software may have the manual zoom automatically enabled. So it might just be zoomed in all the way. If it is zoomed in, in the software, you will have to disable the "manual zoom" setting. On mines I click on Options, then Preferences and when the Properties window opens up look for the tab that has these settings. On mine its under "Face Tracking". This is where you can zoom in, zoom out, or pan left, right, up, down, center. Also important that I mention: I can only change those settings when the image preview size is set at 640 x 480 or lower.

Harry213 I believe we both have the same camera. My best results for best detail have been either a tiny little low level table light or using ambiant light while holding the camera. I have to have some hit the capture button but it does great results for the camera the leds seem to just reflect back on proofs or coins that are in pretty good shape. But you can take incredibly pics with the leds on I have pictures in my other posts. Coin photography is challenging at best

Harry123: thanks for the great thread; bought one as an xmas gift.
Ivanrob: I have the same software programs with the scope I just received (very similar to those here and the one you linked). I was able to load everything but I am having the same problem as you. Detail works great but I can't get focus on a whole coin and the controls for focusing in the program are not active. I am left with manual focusing. Maximum focus distance seems to be only about 2-3 inches. I am currently tinkering and will let you know if I make any progress.

Awesome ! You won't regret the investment, the scope and stand has been worth every penny in my opinion. I've gotten lots and lots of use from mine and don't know what I'd do without it. In fact I'm thinking of buying another one, to have as a back-up, just in case this one gets damaged. Like I said, it's worth every penny.. Looking forward to seeing your results.

Harry, an excellent thread. Thanks to all for the awesome info. I am a newbie and feel fortunate to be able to take advantage of all of the experience shared by you and others on this subject.
Is the camera that your original link points to the one that you bought? I am ready to place an order.

Welcome to the thread yooper and thanks for all the kind remarks. It has been fun learning to use this scope and it would not have been possible without all the tips, tricks, comments and suggestions everybody here has contributed along the way.
Yes the camera that the link in the original post points to is the one I purchased. There are variants of this scope that were/are produced by others, and can be found for sale on various other internet e-commerce sites. Basically all look the same with minor differences. The major difference I've seen here, with the other scopes, is with the image capture software CD that ships with them.

Anyone tried the Celestron handheld deluxe digital microscope ? Just a bit pricier (46$ here in Canada) but the software might actually work for me.

Harry, just received my new USB scope, the same one you have. Hardware setup on my Win 8.1 laptop took only about 15 min. I can capture images using the "red button". However I seem to have been shortchanged on the software. The only app I received is called Amcap and it is a video recording app. Haven't got anything to adjust camera settings, measure, etc.
I see from previous posts that you have been kind enough to share you app software with others. Would really appreciate it if you could do the same for me. My email is turned on in CCF profile.

I will assume you already explored all the files that are on the CD and did not find anything else, so, Yep, it looks like they sent you another random image capture software program. Oddly I was just mentioning this in the prior post. I wonder what the logic or reason is behind the constant "switching up" on the bundled software that ships with these?. Makes me wonder; what other software might be out there that can be used with these USB microscopes?. It would be cool if there was a list compiled somewhere of all the apps and software that exists for these things.
It could also be due to a compatibility issue between the previously released apps and the newer Windows 8. One of the things that comes to mind is that I don't think Windows 8 was released yet when I purchased my scope and started this thread. I use the scope on my Windows 7 PC. I know I had an issue with it on my Vista laptop, and could not get it to work due to a conflict with the web-cam. And I just bought a new Windows 8.1 laptop that I have not tried to install the scope onto it yet. I can't wait to try it out on it.
It should be a piece of cake for me to just forward you the email with the file attachment. However I recall this was not possible through CCF email since it was a .EXE file, and my Gmail wouldn't allow it either, so I had to go through my old Yahoo account. You may have to find out if your email will accept the .EXE file from me as well.
I will send you a PM now with my yahoo email, reply with the email account you want me to send the files to.. We'll see if that works.

Just change the filename to something more innocuous (maybe .jpg) before emailing it and have the recipient change it back to .exe. It won't do anything to the actual file.

OK so here's my embarrassing story. I was sick in bed most of the day but couldn't resist trying out my new toy. This is my excuse for not being thorough in my approach. :)
I plugged in the microscope and Win 8.1 recognized it right away. I then inserted the software disk. The disk did not auto run so I opened it in Explorer. I found a file called DrvSetup (no file extension)and ran it. It created a folder in Program Files (x86). Since no icon was created, I searched all of these files for an Imaging app. Found a file called amcap, opened it, played with it and discovered that it was a video capture app. Not what I needed so I looked through every file in the directory. Found some more app files but none of them would open.
Back to the disk. Saw another app file that said setup. Tried it and it would not open. Cr_p! Seemed to be another of those disks with missing software. Solution: holler for Harry's help.
This morning with a clearer mind, I decided to look at the disk on my win 7 laptop with broken USB and other problems. (Reason I bought a new laptop) Tried to run the second setup file and it worked! It loaded MicroCapture. I guess maybe I have a compatibity issue with win 8.1. Just to be sure I loaded the disk back in the win 8 laptop and clicked on the second setup file. After a short pause it started to load. Don't know why it would not do so yesterday.
To end a long, sad story, with a happy ending, I am up and running. Harry, I apologize for crying wolf too quickly and for taking up your time. I sincerely appreciate your willingness to help. It is a testament to the quality of members of this forum.
SuprDave, thank you also. I hope this posting is not inappropriate for this forum.
