Quote: from lear capital mintage of up 5000000 John did an extra zero or two get in there in error? 5M would be a huge mintage. edit: nevermind - I see you corrected to 500k Hopefully, we can an accurate actual mintage some day but I think this one might be more rare than anticipated. Based on Lear Capital's website, they don't seem to be pushing the coin any more. It's virtually impossible to find unless you use the direct link posted by Dcadon on page one of this thread.

A Mark bullion was the company that commision this coin with an exclusive from the RCM, lear capital at one time had exclusive sales for this coin untill a few weeks ago. the lear rep told me a few weeks ago they were the one to commision this coin this was wrong info. this would explain why there is such a huge markup for a bullion coin there is two middlemen with at one time a monopoly situation untill recently with the Canadian dealers complaining. the mintage of up to 500000 came from the same lear rep. may not be accurate. A Mark is a large US bullion wholesaler

FYI, the ebay auction showing mintage of 8500 ended with 10 bids and selling price of $100. There is now at least one other listing from a different user touting a mintage of 8500. Lots of controversial information about this one which is unfortunate because the coin is quite nice.

I like the artwork on this coin, and I'm attracted to its unusual weight of 1.5 ozt, but I will be passing on this one. Just my own personal preference.
I like a coin of diameter - a larger circumference looks nice to me. This ounce-and-a-half coin has a smaller diameter than the one ounce American Silver Eagle bullion coin.
As for the distribution controversy: I am a little indignant that a Canadian legal tender coin is distributed externally first. If it was a proprietary, non Canadian legal tender round or coin, it would simply be a matter of contract between producer and distributor.
But this is a legal tender coin of my country.

Mine are still in zip-lock from the store. I was thinking of kicking the bumble bee or ladybug out of their capsule, but decided against it.

I don't know if you'll find a proper capsule for this coin, unless someone makes extra thick ones? I put it in a standard 38mm capsule, it doesn't close completely flat, but enough to make it airtight I think.

Quote: I like the artwork on this coin...I am a little indignant that a Canadian legal tender coin is distributed externally first I agree on the art work and I just saw that this coin was designed by Germaine Arnaktauyok who also designed the 1999 Nunavut toonie and a 2000 $200 gold piece. As for the distribution of coins, sadly several of the special and privy marked SMLs over the years have been issued outside of Canada first and/or exclusively. I don't like it either but it is definitely nothing new.

With regards a round capsule for storing this coin, the closest fit seems to be the X38 from Air-Tites in the United States. The capsule is 38mm x 4.5mm but the actual internal depth is 3.96mm, as stated on their site. Would sure be a better fit than the standard 38mm capsule but not perfect. Haven't been able to try one yet.

Thanks guys. @dcadon: I also had the same idea as you, and actually my capsules of ladybug and bee are more than the bear coins, but finally, against it too. @thehulk, I tried a standard 38mm one, I just wonder if the capsule does not close completely, it may press and hurt the coin in the long run ?
