Not only is it wrong to do this to coins. I think its against the law to deface coins to the point they can not be used in commerace. Why would coin collectors damage coins? I can see making jewelry out of worn out coins. But to outright destroy them and take thes away from generations to come. Well to me this is just flat out WRONG.

When I was a lot younger, bout the only thing I ever did intentionally (other than railroad tracks, and stacking coins and smashing with a 2-ton press) was shooting a dime at close to 75 yds with a .22 rifle. Never found the dime though.
Wasn't there a famous cowboy sharpshooter that would toss a silver dollar in the air and put a bullet through the center of it?

Hi folks, here is a link to the law in the U.S. regarding damaging coins. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/331Note the word FRAUDULENT. You can do whatever you want to the coins as long as they do not misrepresent. Carve a hobo nickel? Legal. Engrave a love token? Legal. Cut a Morgan with a band saw? Legal. Alter a date or mint mark? Illegal. Cut down a cent to use as a dime in a coke machine? Illegal. Use a 3D scanner and CNC mill to make your own copy dies to create error coins? Illegal. As a carver of hobo nickels (I teach hobo nickel carving at the ANA summer seminar), I find artistically altered coins to be very interesting and when I can take a coin I paid about $2 for and turn it into something I can sell for several hundred, I'm a happy camper. Joe Paonessa America's greatest left handed hobo nickel carver (North of Chicago)

The second photo shows the tips of some of the steel hand gravers I use. No power/air tools.
