Matthew, I believe that "can you identify . . . ?" is a flowing hair bust. And jfransch, an addendum: I showed my mom your gift this morning and after much gasping and wide-eyed wonder (I've never seen her so excited over coins before!) she told me I should thank you from her, for being so kind and helping me get started Also, FIRST COINS EVER where I said "don't touch the faces!" and she actually listened to me, so . . . BONUS GIFT!!

Secret Santa received here, and being the bad boy that I am, it got immediately opened. Thanks to someone in New York for a lovely Australian florin for my type set (as an aside, it doesn't seem fair the the Aussies get so many cool animals on their coins and all we get is dead presidents. Think we can work a trade? Couple of dead prezzies for some wallabies or something? Heck, we could probably even send you a couple of live ones.)and a set of Canadian quarters for my Northern type set. Also sent me a lotto ticket, which won $5, now I just have to figure out how to collect on it.

... a flowing hair bust. Correct answer, nina, but incorrect description. From the Red Book: Flowing Hair Type/Small Eagle Revere Draped Bust Type/Small Eagle Reverse Draped Bust Type/Heraldic Eagle Reverse Your mom's reaction was wonderful. More important than any coins, your Secret Santa brought you and her together in a very special way.

matthewvincent . . . well . . . oops. (I think I did pretty good for it being a coin TOTALLY out of my price range!!) What's even more exciting to me is that she used to collect coins, and I think this was exactly the nudge she needed to get going again . . . she asked me for an Ike dollar to keep (which I provided in a flip because my mom and "DON'T TOUCH THE FACES!" could practically be an internet meme), and now is all excited over these silvers! I hope it's so; some of the things she has tucked away fascinate me and I'd love to teach her the technical stuff about her little treasures.

Nina, I think you did fantastic! Over the years I have read the Red Book from cover to cover. But when I reached these early coins I just read the description and moved on. Too expensive. That you did identify the Flowing Hair tells me that just because you cannot afford these coins [YET!], it does not mean that you are not learning about them. Young collectors such as yourself please me a lot! Now, on to your mom. BINGO! You reawakened her interest in coins. What a nice bonus. No doubt your excitement stirred memories of her own excitement. Mother and daughter excited together. Now THAT is a Hallmark Christmas Card!: Seated at the dining room table, Christmas Tree in the background, wearing matching red sweaters, mother and daughter examine a coin through a magnifying glass. Eyes bright and smiles on their faces, hot cocoa steaming, these two young ladies are making memories together. Too romantic a notion? Well, that's me.

Nina If your mom catches the spark of coin collecting, that will be the best Christmas gift you can hope for. Like Matthewvincent says above, I can also see you two seated around the table with your magnifying glass identifying and sorting some newly acquired coins and sharing a moment in time you will never forget. Merry Christmas to you and your mom.

I'm getting concerned. I shipped my Secret Santa package on Dec 12th. The Post Office delivery confirmation says it was properly delivered. My Secret receiver has not posted that he has received it
