Tripoli, the coins are amazing!

Wow MJT, those coins look horrible on the ebay link you provided. NGC did not even assign a grade on a few of the coins besides stating, "brilliant uncirculated". The NGC MS 64 assigned on the $10 vs tripoli ICCS MS 64 is a huge difference. I would choose tripoli's coin any time of day. For those that want accurate grading, send it to ICCS. Those that want to flip and get an over-graded coin, send to NGC or PCGS. @tripoli, it would be interesting what either PCGS or NGC would grade your $10 ICCS MS64 if you have it sent cross-grading.

@coinsplus. I have seen hi-quality scans only, but not any PCGS or NGC coins in person, so I'm reluctant to venture an opinion. I think my coins are accurately graded. That NGC 1914 MS64 on ebay right now, has a lot of contact marks, especially the cheek area, so they appear to be giving a large allowance for the mint state luster. I'm sure that coin is nicer in person, I don't think scanners do these coins any justice. Mine doesn't do anything to capture the golden orange luster around the rims, it just looks like a shadow.

Here are the updated mintage numbers for the gold coins. I posted this awhile back in another thread, but in case some of you are not following other sections. The total RCM count came from Sandy Campbell and released coins came from the RCM sheets. Thanks to all, especially daryldaryl, coinplus and CC-Ottawa for their help on getting these numbers together.

What is the cost to have coins graded? PCGS vs ICS?

Thanks very much purelywasted for posting this chart! Kudos as well to daryldaryl, coinplus and CC-Ottawa for tracking down the numbers. This appears to be the most complete breakdown of these gold coins that I have seen yet. It's extremely helpful.

I wonder how many of these coins that were not at the B of C have been melted for gold value. No way to find out but I bet there has been quite a few.

we have no way of knowing how many were melted over the years,, but I do know, that these hoard coins have relegated all my other 1912-14 coins to mere bullion status.
How many ended up with a complete set of all 6 pieces? Whether a Premium Select set or a hand select set.

I'm still in shock and disbelief, but... I'm happy to report that my Hand Selected 1914 $5 gold coin has now arrived, almost five months after I ordered it. Fortunately, it was definitely worth the long delay as the coin is simply stunning! The reverse is near perfect and there are just two tiny marks on the background of the obverse. King George V never looked better. Both sides have fantastic lustre. This coin completes my set of all six, composed of Hand Selected 1912, 1913, and 1914 $5 coins; and Hand Selected 1912 $10, as well as 1913 and 1914 Premium Hand Selected $10 coins. These were definitely worth the price, aggravation and wait times, as they are simply an amazing piece of Canadian numismatic history. I believe a complete set would be very difficult to assemble without the Bank of Canada release and would probably be out of reach to most in the kind of condition made available. I plan to post pics as soon as I can take some decent photos. For those of you still waiting for the RCM to ship your coins, I recommend that you call and ask to speak to a supervisor (frequently!). It worked for me.

i am still waiting for my $5 1914....i have lost all hope in getting a nice looking one. I think they tossed mine around and ill probably get some crappy AU coin. They per-charged my CC like 5 times...i really dont understand why if I ordered the DAY BEFORE my friends, they got theirs back in FEB and mine is nowhere to be seen.

I think because you are RoyalSilver, if you were RoyalGold as the coins you asked for, the history would be different...

The 1914 $5 was oversold the last time around.

So what happens next if the coins are oversold?

RoyalSilver et al, Take heart guys, although I shared in your frustration and annoyance (to put it mildly) up until my 1914 $5 arrived last week, the coin is definitely outstanding! I believe you will get a beautiful and worthy coin. As far as what are the causes for the unbelievable delays in shipping these coins and the haphazard order, only those at the mint who are responsible for ensuring delivery in a timely fashion know for sure. Will we ever we told the truth? I doubt it very much. Hopefully there are not many 1914 $5s left to ship since it's by far the rarest of the six and RCM only released 1,925 Hand Selected coins. For those of you who are still waiting, remember the the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Don't feel embarrassed to keep bugging the mint until you get your coins. If anyone should be ashamed it's those responsible for allowing this situation to go on for so long.
