That's what I thought, but didn't want to say it

Oh... I thought it was seriously, due to possible relatively low grade of the coin. As someone mentioned earlier - do not exclude possibility, that it will be "rejected" by other customer order.

Here is one of my 1914 $5 coins. Two pics, one with flash, one with flash off.

That is not very good condition compared to many others I've seen.

Was it the latest RCM shipment? (November order) I am realy newbie in the old circulated coins and in the grading, and IMO - this coin just has the issue with the edges, but in overall, as 100 years old coin, could satisfy me.

If you compare it side by side with other coins, you will see that the condition is not even close to others. It could just be bad luck to the person that received it but the one I got a couple months back was in much better shape for sure. I've seen plenty better than mine as well.

A couple of scratches in the front field, and some chatter behind the King's head? The coin looks pretty good to me. Try comparing it to a non hoard coin, and the luster is the difference. I'm sure if you are really disappointed in your coin, you will find many takers for it.

In deed! Compared to non-hoard coins, they are all very good. I've got a 1912 $5 non-hoard and it has WAY more wear. The 1913 and 1914 $5 coins I received from the recent re-release are by far not the best out there or the worst. I believe just having ANY of these hoarded coins are worth the mint's price of $565 with tax for the $5 hs coins. Even the hoard coins of the poorest condition were a good value especially when the price of gold was much better towards the end of 2012. The history that comes with any of these coins, part of the hoard, or not, is well worth the difference between gold value and cost to actually buy the coin. I paid around $110 more than gold value for my 1912 which is in very poor condition. I like having the cases and the presentation of the hoard coins but I equally like the dull, worn 1912 I've got for its seperate history, having been passed through countless hands over the years. I can only imagine how many items were purchased with it, debts paid with it, and possibly bets made with it. It has many stories to tell if it could, I'm sure. I would be a happy owner of any of the coins that have been posted here, including the last one. The extremely long wait time with mint's delivery is the biggest upset with the deal but I don't think it is a reflection of the condition of the coin.

CC-Ottawa> Glad you finally got it! Looks very nice to me. I'm not much of a grader but it looks pretty free of bag marks on the obverse. MS-62+?

thanks. I'm not a grader of coins at all.
It looks 'ok' but it is quite dull even compared to another gold coin I have from the same era. The pics were taken without a flash.
There are few small black spots on the reverse and a couple of scratch marks on the obverse. And wear marks on George's cheek bone.

CC-Ottawa, I have to agree with your assessment. I expected my $1914 $5 gold coins to be better than what I got. Everyone seem to rave about how great their coins are and that they grade at MS-63 or better. I don't think my $5 gold coins come close to that.

@MoneyPenney...you are in Vancouver, aren't you? If you are curious, we can meet for coffee and you can compare your 1914 $5 with my ICCS graded examples in MS62 & MS63. I think the coins look even better when seen through the ICCS flips, rather than the thicker capsules from the RCM.
