For those of you still waiting for your coins, be optimistic. As I previously posted, I received my 1914 Hand Selected $5 only two weeks ago (also after a five month wait) and it's definitely a winner. I don't believe that there is a correlation between the date shipped and the quality of the coin. I also don't think these delays have anything to do with the coins being oversold and that the mint is desperately trying to get them back from dealers (although this is a possibility, I suppose). And I highly doubt that they're searching the remaining hoard reject destined for melting. This would be very unethical, since the amounts made available were fixed in gold, um, er, stone. I'd just attribute it to good old-fashioned incompetence. RCM Ordering Department RCM Shipping Department

I received my 2 1914 $5 coins and I am disappointed. One of the coins is quite similar to the one on the last page and one is WORSE than that one. Lots of edge chips. I think one is MS60, the other AU58.
I also received a 1914 $10 coin. That one don't look too bad, maybe a MS62.
If you ask me, they either went back to the pile of rejected coins or the they bought them back from the dealers. If they came back from the dealers, they must sent back the bad looking ones.

Hi MoneyPenny!
I'm sorry to hear that you two 1914 $5's are not up to your expectations.
Frankly I am surprised. I would have thought that you would have received coins that would grade at least MS-62, if not better.
The Bank of Canada has released 1,924 Hand Selected 1914 $5 for sale, and PGCS (as per their May 6 Population Report) has graded a total of 219 of these coins (over 11%).
Of these, 26 graded MS-64, 39 graded MS-63+, 152 graded MS-63, and only 1 graded MS-62+, and 1 MS-62. No Reserve coins received a lower grade.
Maybe you are being too harsh with your own perception and they are better than you think.
However, if you really feel you've been short changed, I would contact the mint and see if anything can be done. You have nothing to lose. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Hey folks! I have discovered why some of you have received poor quality coins. A hidden camera in the mint's vault reveals why. Here's one of the employees hand selecting your coins.... Sorry, I couldn't resist. I reiterate: If you are not satisfied, demand the the RCM make things right. These coins were purchased with the expectation that they would be in decent shape. To quote the RCM's own website description, they were "Hand-selected by Mint staff for a high quality appearance, with minimal evidence of wear caused by handling, storage, or environmental conditions, these Hand-Selected coins are wonderful examples of Canadian numismatic history. They offer the best combination of quality and affordability which gives a wide range of customers the chance to buy a special coin not seen on the market for nearly 100 years." Also, there was absolutely no warning or communication to buyers, that the coins would be shipped on a haphazard basis and the some folks would have to wait over five months to receive them. I feel it is incumbent on the mint to make right with those patient customers who feel more than let down by a coin that doesn't live up to the mint's own description.

Got shipment notice for HS 1914 $5 (Ordered Nov 29). Can't wait till Monday-Tuesday to see the coin. The February purchased HS 1914 $5 was exactly what expected....interesting, what I'll get this time.

No....I do not want to cancel it. I meant, that I want to see it as soon as possible, in the positive meaning of it.
