Canada Sells Its Entire Gold Reserves

As our Bank of Canada head Mark Carney looks overseas to his new destination the white cliffs of Dover to head up the Bank of England, Canadians bid him a fond farewell they must also say goodbye to the very last of its Gold Reserves.

November 28th, 2012 was established as an inauspicious day with no fanfare or recognition by the masses that finally they disposed of the only money that they had as a country. Its true the reserves were few to be sure, but did have a link to a forgotten past, one that is extinguished finally as 2.828 tons of the yellow metal were sold off. As an offering to Canadians that cared, 12% of the holding were offered up to the populace, at numismatic premiums of course.

You see the last of the Gold was held as coins. The $5 and $10 dollar gold coins were minted for only three years, from 1912 to 1914.

The Ministry of Finance held the coins in a vault for the last 75 years under the auspices of the Exchange Fund Account (EFA). The resulting press release to Canadians announced why the actions were taken, with no discourse.
"To liquidate these physical assets and convert them into high credit quality, marketable fixed income securities, 30,000 of these coins were hand-selected for sale as high-quality treasures of Canada's numismatic past." The Bank of Canada records the official international reserves November 23, 2012 being worth 189 million dollars of Gold held in a vault that was all but forgotten.

Finally Canadians can move on to bigger and better forms of currency, plastic notes and steel nickels which sounds like a bad rock band.

Not too long from now even these relics of the past will fade from memory with the advent of digital wealth. Bitcoins will envelope our young who without a thought of the origins of money, will purchase the next fantastic app for their phone and with their phone.

Am I a relic because this bothers me? Having been born in the 60's and never seeing a gold coin in circulation or even caring or thinking about what real money was until 3 years ago, being caught in between is disconcerting. So I save some money by buying a national gold coin that no one has seen for 75 years, holding on to a ghost of the past, likely to be forgotten except by the few odd folk that like to collect coins and retain some history.

@zzzhuge

Ah! A very valid question ...

I firstly proceeded to order a 1914. (Because of the lower mintage)

Then, I cancelled it and ordered a 1912 instead.

Here's why: (Quirky rationale follows ...)

1. The 1912 coin is 100 years old. (Yes, I know the 1914 will be 100 years old soon.) I like "old".

2. With the 1914 coin being of lower supply, perhaps the chances of getting a nice one might be reduced. (I'm not ordering a premium coin.)

3. Despite the drastic variance in mintage, the online dealers that I have seen do not show differing sell price for the three years.

4. Referring back to #2 above, I would rather have a nicer looking coin than a scarcer (perhaps more valuable) coin.

So, my decision was not based on what may be most economically sound, but rather toward getting a nice looking coin without the premium coin cost.

This could be totally erroneous, but I had to go with my gut.

I have bullion coins (which are saving/investment).

And I have collectible coins (which are ones of historical note or pleasing to regard).

This one falls under the latter.

I thought the Mint would have already picked the coins to be sold already. So those shown in press conference would be of inferior quality. But from the photos I've seen so far even those in the bags are in pretty good condition. So I have high hope that even the hand picked (non-premium) ones would be in great condition. Also it looks like the 5$ coin will be housed in a capsule with foam, which I like for small coins.

Indeed! I have that hope as well.

Shopaholic, did you have any idea that your initial post would generate 17 pages of comments?

Something that occurs to me is that Master Club status doesn't seem to have much bearing on all of this. It was available to everyone.

No. And I think if I haven't started this thread, someone else would. But I am surprise that even though the emails were sent to MC members, we don't have any advantage, not even the privilege to pre-order. Or did they just use us to create a hype?

The fact is purchasing any of these coins is a great investment in history.

That said, unless you get an MS64 grade coins or better you will be depending on the value of gold increasing. Will that happen? Probably. And if it doesn't, you own a piece of Canadian history.

For those you who bought, congratulations. For the rest of us, well...nothing ventured, nothing gained.
