wasnt these coins supposed to be melted down already? if you own a 1914 5 dollar version and paid market value last week, am I the only one that feel the rcms policy in this case is wrong in selling these coins. it shows no respect for collectors and the whole industry. whats next 30000 1921 5 cents and 50 cent pieces, that was not melted and available tommorow. what stops the RCM from getting the old dies for all key dates and create more coins just to make a profit with no regards to the hobby.

@john100 1. I don't think RCM will re-strike these coins in near feature even they have the dies (of cause nobody can guarantee) 2. Rare coin collecting has risk, say for instance, S.S. Central America shipwreck discover hundreds rare $20 double eagle gold coin in UNC condition, or 1960's europe found $20 gold coin in bank vault, even 2005/06 GSA found $5 1914 Canadian gold coin...

one other note of caution regarding this release, if lets say ICCS or pcgs in the next 3 months certifies only 1000 coins between ms 63 to 65 they will carry only a small preminum, just the sheer volume will create chaos in these gold coins.

panda, sure in the ship wreck cases and the collector with the roll of 1914 5 cents are natural results of collecting. but if these gold pieces are supposed to be already melted? the RCM shows no repect for the numismatic field for both collectors and dealers. if I owned the roll of 1914 5 cents , I would have graded only the best 5 to 6 pieces and destroyed the rest.

@john100, You are absolutely right, these coins should have been melted a long time ago. I don't believe these coins were forgotten about in some bank of Canada vault. This was planned with no regard to true collectors. I jumped on the hyped up band wagon and am now left with a bit of sour taste in my mouth

I can definitely feel the pain of all the current owners of these coins but I'm personally glad they didn't destroy all of this history. I think it is awesome that I will be able to one day give my daughter a coin that was minted 100 years before she was born. I'm glad more of this history was preserved.

Quote: Can we conclude that This Time the 1912 coins were released with least qty among the 3 years? Yes, we can assume that. I wished I bought one of the 1912 $5 gold coins. Now I can't complete the set of all $5 gold coins.

Perhaps it is harder for the Mint to pick out good coins from the 1912 year. WWI broke out in 1914, so if the Government has to hold up these coins, 1914 would be the ones that are most easliy accessible by them. These 1914 coins might not have seen a single day of sunlight after they were minted, and would have higher quality then those of 1912, and hence easier to get picked and be sold in this sale. Just my guess :)

most of the members here are missing the point regarding the sale of these gold coins, if they were supposed to be melted 70 years ago by releasing these coins yesterday is almost fraud. can you imagine if they have a bag of unmelted 1921 5 cents and 50 cents pieces? these are government agency the RCM could have melted these coins created a 2012 version of this exact coin and sold it at higher price without creating choas to the existing owners of this series.
