Quote:most of the members here are missing the point regarding the sale of these gold coins, if they were supposed to be melted 70 years ago by releasing these coins yesterday is almost fraud. can you imagine if they have a bag of unmelted 1921 5 cents and 50 cents pieces? these are government agency the RCM could have melted these coins created a 2012 version of this exact coin and sold it at higher price without creating choas to the existing owners of this series. Actually they did exactly that in 2002 for the 90th anniversary of the first gold coin. The RCM that year produced a replica of the 1912 $5 and $10 Gold coins. The coins look exactly like the original coins except the year stamped on the coin was 1912-2002. I rather have the originals though.

arghhhh I've been waiting to press the confirm button in my sopping cart for the $5 1914....i cnat get myself to do it. If it wasnt for the tax id probably do it in a second. Although the price to melt is not bad at all.... WHAT TO DO!
do you guys think that current coins in the hands of dealers will go up or down in value? I wanted to own one of these for a long time but I cannot allow myself to spend $500 on this just yet.

^^^^ You should order while you can because you can always cancel the order before it ships. It won't ship until Dec. 28 (or later), so you got a whole month to think about it.
If you wait to long, the 1914 $5 coin may be sold out.

Upon that advice....i just pulled the trigger. I will track the prices of these coins until the ship date, if I like what I see...i'll keep the order. If the prices drop I will cancel. I hope the non-premium ones are at least AU

The mintage on thses coins did not change. 1914 $5 still only have mintage of 31122 no matter what happen. I will never buy the premium coins because these guys are not graders, moreover, not much premium above the price they sell at for premium coins. Bought all the coins just to have the set, bought 3 of the 1914 $5. Thinking of getting more.

Is there any documentation that these were supposed to be melted? If not, then I see no problem with the sale of these coins. It's not like they are minting more and dating them 1912 - 1914. It would be different if they had stated that these were (or were going to be) melted.

John you are way off on this one. These coins were held by the Bank of Canada. The RCM was only used as an agent to sell them and the RCM only receives a fixed management fee for the sale. The RCM's policy and releasing old coins, no regard for the hobby, blah blah argument is a non-starter. The coins were not just found in the back of a vault. They were know to exist and were held as part of the Government of Canada's Exchange Fund Account originally to help finance the war effort. The proceeds of this sale go back into the Exchange Fund Account (i.e. not profit for the RCM). The mintage of these coins didn't change. In fact, the survival rate will be reduced because the BoC is going to melt over 200,000 of the coins they held. Would you rather the BoC had simply commissioned the RCM to melt all of these collectible coins without giving collectors the opportunity to have them in their collections? If yes, how would that help the hobby?

Looking at the trends prices, I find this to be quite a bargain. If these coins grade minimum au55 then even with the tax 565 is a great deal. Plus it comes in a fancy box :P. I'm feeling better about my order already lol, trying to justify this purch ASE

Took me one day to do the purchase
But even my friend that she isn't collector told "you are spending a money on well designed modern commemorative and waiting with real coin?"
So I've decided to touch the history. Wanted to buy 1912, but they were sold-out (maybe available by phone, but I will not 30 minutes online)...did an order for $5 1914. And now I happy - have the gift plus reached maximum CC limit.
Thanks again to all, providing info and liquidating mine and RoyalSilver's concerns.

My only concern was the trends price after this release. I'm looking for this as an investment, I will be tracking the trends price

1912 $5 Hand Selected isn't sold out, at least not as of 5 minutes ago but had to call in to place the order. Surprisingly I was only on hold for 5-10min. Bit the bullet and ordered one of each year. Expensive Christmas indeed!
