I purchased a whole bunch of the $5 Gold coins and deeply regret not jumping in on the $10 gold coins.

@jw-collectibles: can you post pictures of these original bags? Do they have the original BofC tags?

I only just now learned of these. I had to do some digging to find what was being spoken of, and I came across this page; http://www.mint.ca/store/news/a-nat....Vru8hPkrLD4Quote: According to Canadian Coin News, it is now official that the remaining 200,000 gold coins from 1912-1914 were melted down. That is sad indeed, as they could have sold for a premium over gold prices for years to come. With low bullion prices, I'd love to get some of these - unfortunately, the few that I came across on ebay appear to be listed for a huge premium over the RCM prices...

@jw collectibles: Nice bags with tags. Congrats on selling them. Hard to believe what collectors paid for them on ebay.

Glad to hear that the RCM finally melted the rest of the gold hoard as they promised they would.....That should stabilize the market value of the remaining 1912-1914 gold coins and push the prices higher not just according to bullion values....After all...the Canada 1912-14 gold coins remaining are a tiny mintage in comparison to the huge volume of comparable Dominion gold sovereigns of the same years which were minted in the 20-40 million per year..The five and ten dollar gold coins are are true numismatic rarities and bullion value should hardly come into play at all.......and the high grade coins are really undervalued right now.....a great investment at todays prices....

"Our short-lived experience with a domestic gold currency was abruptly ended by the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 as the Government of Canada recovered the majority of circulating $5 and $10 coins and withheld remaining stocks from circulation to help finance the war effort." http://www.mint.ca/store/news/a-nat....VteJhvBfOrV******* Something I hadn't realized, part of the hoard were gold coins taken out of circulation.

All the coins look to be MS condition. Its really too difficult to give a grade unless better pictures are posted.

A boxed premium set will grade in the MS63-65 range, and that is beyond the grading prowess of myself and others without the coin in hand. My guess is that one coin will be exceptional at 65, one not so nice at 63, for an AVG grade of 64 for the set. This from the 3 sets I was lucky enough to see in person.

Thank you DarrylDarryl and Tripoli, at least it gives me an idea. I must say this is pretty difficult to get good pictures with the capsules. I'll now try to find out the MS-65 one.

Trends has finally updated pricing for the 1912-1914 Gold series. As the market has demonstrated, 1912 Ten Dollar and 1914 Five Dollar were the best purchase in the RCM sale in late 2012. Here is the Trends for each of the Gold coins in MS-62: $5's 1912: $525; 1913: $550; 1914: $1,000 AGW is 0.242 troy oz. $380 of gold at CAD$1570 spot $10's 1912:$1,400; 1913: $1,100; 1914: $1,100 AGW is 0.484 troy oz $760 of gold at CAD$1570 spot My thinking is that these values are about right for retail. Maybe the 1914 $5 and $10's are a bit high. None of these should sell for significant discount to trends. It has taken three years for the Trends price to be adjusted for market reality......
