One day to know for sure. I hope whatever it is, I can afford it. I can afford free, that's all I can say for sure.

If this does happen then what are Key Date years for gold coins? A list of any or all would be great!

@Redzapsid: I don't think there is such a thing as "free" especially when they know MC members willing to shell out over $1000 a year to be a member.

We can all speculate what will happen tomorrow. The best thing to do is just wait.

It's a little peculiar how the mint tries to keep this news from all the potential customers, but leaks it to other sources. What a way!

Whatever it is I am not interested. cause I am not a MC.
Agree it is exclusive for MC. But not another "hype" like glass bee, dino and the 5 penny set.
my 2 cents

There is no doubt that MP has broken the story here. Kudos. The RCM sent out this call to a photo and it's been picked up by all of the press wires. I have to agree that the Mint is not very good at cloak and dagger mysteries and that they had us going for a few days. But in the end, old gold coins are going to be out of the price range for all but the most committed collector. Unless these coins are offered at spot, I won't be making any purchases tomorrow. Will any of you? BTW, the press release says these coins will be on sale to the public so it's likely that the sale will not be restricted to MC. The e-mail sent to MC only says we'll be the first to receive the announcement. It doesn't say we'll have priority in buying the coins. "In the coming days you will be among the first to receive a special, historic announcement"

Nice pick up, CC. If that's the case that would add insult to injury.

A ill' research: In 1912 Canada finally came out with original, truly Canadian gold coins. $5, and $10 coins of the similar design were minted. Apparently a $20 was also planned but did not come to be. The weights and fineness (90% gold) of the coins were identical to the American coins being produced at the same time, so they could be used back and forth for equal value. This was a departure from the above mentioned sovereigns which are produced on 22k British standards, and of slightly different weight. The obverse is the standard bust of king George V, and the reverse in my humble opinion is one of the most beautiful in the history of Canadian coinage. It features the old Canadian coat of arms superimposed upon two boughs of maple. (See picture). The $5`s and $10`s were only produced in 1912, 1913, and 1914...with the 1914`s being the scarcest year. The $5 1914 is usually quite sought after and commands a nice premium over the gold value in sharp condition. Collectors should note, that most of these coins saw limited circulation, and most surviving examples are not going to be very worn. Uncirculated examples will have all the original details present, even under magnification. Much tougher, is to find these coins with no scratch marks...as even uncirculated examples had contact with other coins resulting in some visible damage.

It's a bad day to have one of these 1912 coins in your collection since that market is about to be flooded (assuming that the BoC coins are actually the 1912s) The RCM commemorated the 1912 $5 and $10 gold coins in 2002 with a 90th anniversary version set. The issue price of the two coins was $750 and the only difference with the 1912 coins was the double date and the obverse (QEII rather than George V) 90% Au, 10% Cu Five dollar was 8.36 grams and the Ten was 16.72grams. Gold content 0.242 and 0.484 tr oz respectively. That's roughly $420 and $840 at current spot rate. Recent ebay sales for the $5 have been between $450 and $800 depending mostly on condition and being graded. edit to add: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1912-Canada...em257711c176The description on this listing is very ironic. "71,000 Minted over 100 years ago...how many do you think are really left? My personal opinion is that once it is discovered that most of these were melted in the last 100 years, the prices will skyrocket, making this a great long term investment" In the words of that great philosopher Homer Simpson...D'OH!

We will see. Maybe some of the coins will be "small gold coins"...and affordable too to everyone.
But is it worth to buy the coin, only because Mint will do the big event from the sale, and the coin is affordable?
Even the rarest gem old coin will be looking like a stranger in the collection, if it not "in sync" with some other coins / series
