This coin has environmental damage where it is most important. I like the pointed bust but L or no L?

My advice: Verdicare. And maybe we can get BadThad in here for an opinion?

The pointed bust gives it away. There should be an "L" under the verdigris. nlp

I agree with others .. IMO .. it is a "L" ..
I think the verdigris has gone into the surface of the coin. But it would not hurt to try Verdi-care on it.

Only sure way I know of to remove active green corrosion, like on your coin, is to burn it off. ie bunson burner, gas stove, oven. It doesn't look like the corrosion has eaten into the coin, so, the corrosion should burn off quickly. With your coin, I would use the oven at ~400F for about 5 minutes. Remember, this corrision is CuO, which is green. When you burn CuO, it turns black and will crust off leaving the surfaces beneath exposed. As long as the surfaces below the corrosion are somewhat smooth, than it's removal will be beneficial.

Um...yeah I would not do any of that^. Verdicare will inhibit the further deterioration of this one but the verdigris is most likely into the surface of that one. imo

I have successfully removed vergis from large cents with verdicare. I would soak it in verdicare overnight. Also might give it an acetone dip; acetone may help and won't hurt. IMHO

I think the pointed bust is conclusive for the L variety.

I'm of the opinion that if you can't see the L then what's the point ? I've never heard of burning off verdigris but I might have to experiment now.

The point is that the pointed bust is a diagnostic marker for this coin being the L variety. Just like raised mound is diagnostic for a 1913 Buffalo nickel, even if the coin is dateless. There are enough knowledgeable collectors that would buy a coin like this 1864 even with the L not showing, because it has other diagnostics of the 1864-L.

I know the markers but guess I'm just different. Too many visible L's out there.

The coin has value, I'm not sure burning of the verdigris is a good idea. Actually I am sure it's a bad idea.
