I have come across a 1985 $50 Maple Leaf coin with obverse struck only, but apparently in copper not gold, it seems to be some kind of pattern coin. Could someone please tell me what this might be?

OK thanks, here's the obverse; reverse is shiny blank.

wait... the reverse is blank... I'm thinking someone tried to fake it before gold plating it but never got around to it, as I have never heard of this... any one else?

Based on the caliber of the collection this was found in I doubt this is a fake; I think it is some kind of test or pattern from the RCM but I know little about irregular coins.

If you have access to some late 80's michigan state numismatic society auction catalogues , there were a couple of these for sale then . I remember choosing not to bid on them but can't remember too many details on what they were . Sorry , that doesn't help much .

I believe these have been seen here on CCF and they were found to be paper weights. I may be wrong though.

Hopefully some one on this forum knows what this is.

I found an event that might have had this type of pattern made for it,
The star of the Sale of Gold Maple Leaves in Honk Kong.
This happened in 1985. Other than that I am drawing a blank.

a picture of the blank side would help as well. we could have a better look at the rim.

There are 2 "sets:" One, only the reverse of the "coin", distributed as a gift by the RCM, inside a lucite bloc and the other, only the obverse, used as samples by representatives of the Mint. These pieces were struck by the RCMThe designation of value on the obverse pieces is crude and do not resemble the actual MLs. They are not rare, but are becoming hard to find. XRFed by SPP: they are brass.

Update... PCGS is now certifying these things. I have a near-complete set, and I may send them to PCGS. It could be worth it, if they catch the eyes of a couple of bidders in a future auction.
