I have a coin from Markianopolis that needs help. I bought it a while back thinking I could clean up the deposits on it myself, but I have been unsuccessful so far. Whoever had it before me tried hard, too. Apart from the remaining crud, the coin has been stripped down to bare metal. Don't get me wrong, this coin is still awesome! It depicts Macrinus and Diadumenian. I plan on giving the coin an artificial patina once it has been cleaned completely. When finished, the coin will fit quite nicely with the others I have from this city. It is a high-grade piece. This all being said, would anyone like to take a stab at cleaning this sucker? I can promise you that you are in for a challenge If you would like some pictures I can post one. Thanks!

Post some pics, maybe we can help. It may be that the deposit can be broken down with a solvent/acid that wont affect the metal (its bare metal now anyway, so its not such an issue)

Allow me to tag a question in here too... I saw a coin, it doesn't look bad but it ssayss in the listing "crud on reverse" the price isn't bad and the obverse is very clean, well centred and with good details. Here is a picture of the reverse, do you think anything could be done with it? +how?

hmmmmm....don't know about that one. looks like it may come off...but wouldn't swear. I would buy it for a price that assumed it wouldn't come off.

Yeah, well the price isn't bad but I know it will annoy me that it has this crud on it. I would only buy it as a gamble if I believe I can remove that stuff.
I guess it needs a diamond dusted dental pick and I dont have one of those, or much practice at using one so I am probably best to pass on it...though aside from that it is a near perfect coin.

David - that looks like a rocky encrustation. silver isn't *that* reactive so you may be able to remove it chemically using weak chemicals that wont effect the silver. It may burn out some copper though.
