Most people might not believe this but... Craigslist. I saw it and thought the same thing that throwbackid said earlier... Must be a fake... So I decided to check it out. I called the seller and told them that I was interested in the coin. They told me that they had it looked at by a local coin shop and they told em that it was legit. Weight was right, diameter was correct and it could possibly pull an XF grade... I said I don't care if they were told it was legit or not, I want to see it for myself and have a coin guy I know in my area take a look at it... I needed to hear it with my own ears that it was the real deal. So today I met with the seller and brought the coin guy I know. He may not be an expert in Morgans but he took a look and said he saw nothing suspicious with the "CC" mint mark and in his opinion it was real. So I trusted his judgement and bought it. Now here I am.

Despite the fact that the coin guy said it was real, I'm here trying to make sure 110%. If not, then live and learn I guess. Here are some more pics....

and what an entrance you've made! (In a good way... Great way!! Lol)
I've been looking at this post for over an hour now and am torn...
I'd have to agree with an AU grade for starters.
As for authenticity, again I'm torn... My first feeling was counterfeit, that something just looked off, but now I'm not so sure.. I'm definitely waiting for a few other members to see this post and comment as they know way more than I...
There were a few things that stood out at first, but now I think it could just have been the photos so I don't know. It looks like a die clash to the right of the eagles wing (our right, eagles left) that is common amongst Morgan's, and I'm not sure if its been added to counterfeits (obviously some are pretty good & even silver, while some are horrible) so I can't really use that as a definitive answer.. Someone else will know for sure.
Along with the photos already requested by 1893s could you also possibly get a close up from dead on center of the mintmark?
I have to agree with coinskelly, your definitely way braver than me buying this key raw..
I don't know.. You blew my mind with this one... I'm going to sleep on it, lol... I'll try looking up comparisons again tomorrow (I won't be able to help it).. Lol, my head hurts from staring at it for so long.
Again, welcome, and awesome entrance!

Well if they took it to a coin shop they know what it's basically worth. If you got it for to GOOD of a price I would say it is almost certainly a fake. That being said it looks authentic from the pictures you posted. You need to get it graded no one will touch it ungraded. If it is real you hit a nice little lotto ticket congrats

The die gouge to the left of the crook of the top center cotton leaf looks like it's there. That is a diagnostic for one of the dies used. Clearer pictures would help but I don't want to put you out. I'll let some other pros chime in.

If it's authentic thats certainly a high grade for such a rarity.

Too good a price indeed... Again, when I saw the price they were asking it caught my eye. While discussing with the seller, I was told that when they had it checked at the coin shop, they were told that it was at least XF and could potentially bring upwards of $3,500 plus depending on the final grade. I was told that it was acquired from a relative and they did not wanna mess with sending it out to companies. Story sounds kinda all over the place right? I swear on my life this is exactly how all this went down. It's wild.

and as far as the STOLEN statement... I'm not amused... If you want I could go pull the video tapes from the restaurant where the transaction happened... Baring they have cameras recording and have footage.

Thanks for the link.

.

Are you talking about the little divet to the left of the radius of the cap?

I'm guessing that was not targeted at you as the person who potentially stole this.

This is something you will want TPG service to authenticate even if you do not plan to sell this in the immediate future. If you plan to hang on to it I would suggest ANACS, If you are going to flip it, I would recommend PCGS for the best return.

I apologize. dave700x is right, I did not mean to suggest that YOU stole it. Craigslist, as I'm sure you're aware, has somewhat of a seedy reputation, including criminals fencing stolen property, counterfeit goods, scams, etc.

But, of course, that doesn't mean that everything on Craigslist is some kind of a rip off.

I may be looking at this coin on my cellphone, but my cell has a 5" screen and it's not lacking much. Nothing looks amiss to me, and the opinion of the man who offered a VAM attribution is to be trusted.

We don't often get to see introductions like this, here. More often, it's our lot to explain to our new members why they should be so disappointed. I don't think this is such a case.
