Poll Question
Hi all,

I have been having bad luck with ordering new coins online so I'd like to know how your experiences have been.

How often do you not receive what you purchase? An impaired new coin?

Poll Choices
 What's impaired?
 Once in ten years.
 Once in five years.
 Once a year.
 Every blue moon.
 Every second order.
 All the time.
Can you buy coins without marks on it?

Out of my last 1,355 ebay transactions (since I started keeping track :-) ) I have had 29 problems. 28 of them were resolved to my satisfaction. Only 3 of the problems were coins and all three were resolved. 2 didn't arrive (1 of those had tracking. Went into Canadian Customs and never came out again.) and 1 looked like an 1858 1c Full Vine in the pictures but wasn't when I got it in hand so I returned it for a full refund.

p.s. I'm not counting the seller over-grading the coin as a problem as I only bid/buy based on my own assessment of the grade.

Out of over 3000 transactions, I've only had 4 no-shows. Only one was resolved satisfactorily, 1 the seller refused to make good, 1 just never showed, and 1 was from a scammer who claimed that she didn't actually have the piece, refused to refund the money, and then relisted it again under a different ebay name. On a side note there was a fifth time when I thought the coin was long gone to the land of the missing when suddenly it showed up on my doorstep - literally - over a year after I had bought it. My first thought was "Is this dealer really slow or what?" but when I checked the postmark, nope, he was good - the coin had actually been in the mails for over a year.

Hi Richard,

Not sure what you mean by "impaired" coin... are you saying that the coins are not in as good a condition as you thought they were going to be based on seller's pictures and description of details in the listing...?

Also, please describe the "bad luck with ordering new coins online"...

I've made well over 3,000 transactions on ebay over past 6 years, both buying and selling, and have only experienced coin not getting to where it was supposed to maybe 6 or 7 times...

There's virtually an endless supply of nice vintage Canadian coins on ebay... make sure you are buying from sellers with a long history of excellent feedback, and great comments from buyers about their customer service... only buy from listings that clearly state they accept returns... and make your payment only with PayPal, that way you are protected by the insurance system they have...

And remember, if the coin is not as you expected it to be... contact the seller and complain... if you can't resolve issue open up a dispute on ebay and ask for your money back...

If you don't receive a coin you have paid for... remember it is the "sellers" responsibility to ensure that the coin arrives... most sellers will protect themselves by shipping with a method which includes "signature required on delivery"... that covers them as proof for PayPal insurance...

Good luck with your future online coin purchases, Richard :)

Best Wishes for a Happy & Prosperous New Year!

I can only recall about 3 no-shows ever. One I am 98% sure the seller simply did not ship it to me in the first place, a 1900 wide date 5 cent that went for like 10% of trends. The other was a low value ring I won for an opening bid that I think was legitimately lost in the mail (shipped from the us US coming to Canada). The last was a trinket from China for which I was sent a replacement item.

I was referring getting a coin that is not in the condition expected.
I have made over half a dozen orders over the past two months and I keep getting RCM coins and non-certified circulation coins in less quality condition than was listed. These are purchases from well known companies not ebay purchases.

Although most, if not all, coin dealers will give refunds it is such a hassle to have to keep mailing stuff back.
Thank you very much for all the extra information on ebay and you experiences with online purchases.

I was buying lots of silver a couple of years ago, and it was getting to the point where about 10% of purchases from the US weren't arriving. Rarely had issues within Canada. PayPal covers me obviously, but I stopped buying because I didn't find it fair for sellers to be funding the CBSA pension fund.

I take my hats off to Canada Post, they are absolutely amazing! In the past 15 years, I've made 5,000+ transactions via Canada Post (buy/sell) and at most may have lost 4 items! (2 were enroute from the U.S. via United States Postal Service) I LOVE CANADA POST!

Probably in the last 100 transactions...never. I actually received coins that exceeded my expecfations. I always make sure to only buy if there are lots of good quality pics and the seller dedcribes the coin perfectly. I had recently puchased a lot of 7 canadian silver nickels where the seller described them as "very good condition"...when I got them, 3 of them seemed to be high MS grades and the others low au or xf. Not bad for $17
