Very nice Kennedy dollar! I don't think I would ever buy it but it's still nice.

Quote:What is this "1964 SMS set"? Is it like this one, a 64 Peace dollar with a Kennedy half? Nope, it's the real deal, not a cheezy fantasy coin. Yeah, there are only about 50 known copies, but they are out there, and your set isn't complete without it. Just like you cannot call an ASE set complete without the 95-w proof, even if it is a $5k coin... Just like you cannot complete an SLQ set without a 16, or a LWC set without the keys.. and so on. Every set has it's key(s), and the JFK set is no different. It is a far too easy set without the 64 sms Of course I am just stirring the pot here, but there is a grain of truth, and it is relevent since the whole premise of the thread is about making a "complete" JFK set even more "complete". So why not take it to the next level?

OK, you all know what you can do with your never ending varieties right? (Hmmmm, an icon for that...) Quote: What is this "1964 SMS set" The Special Mint Sets ran from 65-67. There were up to 50 of the SMS produced in 1964. No one knows just why these were done and there is no official record documenting the mintage of these sets. So SOME people evidently consider this to be an integral part of the Kennedy run. *hurls counterfeit Trades at ratio and earle*

I admit the only varieties I am really interested in owning (right now!) are the 71-D FS-102, 77-D, 72 (got it!), 73-D (got it!)and 74 DDOs (got it!) since these are the easily seen DDOs. I also want the 72-D (got it!), 82, and 83 (got it!) No FGs. I found one of the 1967 DDO varieties, but its not as dramatic as the ones mentioned so I am not sure it has a permanent spot in the collection. I also admit I will check fo the other 40% DDOs, DDRs, but am not sure, again, if they will be permanent residents or not. But it is fun to look.

Too many minor varieties for me I'm just glad to have each silver Kennedy excepting the BU 1776-1976, and these sets are inexpensive so I will get one someday.

Great job! Wow! Remember if we view the word "complete" as an absolute - we can never get them all since its almost assured more and more varieties will always be discovered. A lot of people just use what is in the Red Book as a complete list. I personally will consider my collection of JFKs complete when I get the 98S MAtte proof and the rest of the proofs I do not have. However, until just this last year I considered my set complete without proofs of an y sort. The proofs just gave me more fun to collect. The DDOs are even more fun. The first set I ever completed was years ago - it was a Canadian nickel set from 1922-. After it was completed I felt a little like some of the fun was gone. So I started another of the same collection - fun - but not quite the same. So this is why I now tend to also like varieties - just more to hunt for... My hobbies have taught me, over the years, the wisdom of the following: "After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing, after all, as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true." --Spock

Earle42 I do agree with you I have some complete sets and they are nice to have but the fun and enjoyment is in completing them. My man you are so right to put it that way. By the way good luck in completing your journey to a complete set.

Here is where I differ. I not only enjoy getting the set completed, I love having said completed set. It will take me a looooooooong time to complete every set, so knocking one down and moving on works for me. And it does NOT stop me from saving/buying more Kennedys or Ikes or Jeffersons. Thats what all the storage boxes and binders and tubes are for. The albums just represent a solid run of a particular coin.
And yeah, complete is relative. For some that are obsessed with a series (like some of those Ike guys), every variety is a must. For me, in reference to this series, I feel the 98 matte and the 64 accented hair are the two not in the Dansco that are required for the collection to be COMPLETE. All the other varieties are neat, and I will strive to get them. But if I don't, I won't be heart broken.

@ smokeriderdon I agree with you two choices that are not in the Dansco album but the set will never be complete until the design is retired, hence the only "complete set" I have is a Franklin half set. All the rest are work in progress.

Smokeriderdon truth be told, I do agree with you 100%. Actually never thought of it that way but I certainly do now. Thank You!

muddler Very logical point! However, I submit it may not always be the case. I had what I considered to be complete set of the King George V nickels from Canada - production ceased in 1936. Recently a newfound variant has been making waves on a thread here on CCF and ebay (and I think one was slabbed by a legit TPG?) - the "Far 2" variety. I admit - I'd like one now! The hunt is on.
