First off, as my first post, I want to thank everyone on here for all of the great info you've provided me thus far. I'm a novice collector so please bear with me. I have this 1943 Mercury that seems to have a very lightly struck date on it. Couldn't find any info anywhere about it. Was wondering what you guys thought? Mint error or Post mint? Thanks!

It's just a really weak strike in that area, IMO.

Re: John1 Just a fairly cheap USB Microscope I bought "for the kids" that just so happens to be perfect for taking pics for my new hobby =) It doesn't do so well capturing correct coloring, but that may have more to do with lighting than anything else. Here a link to the one I bought: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._o04_s00_i01

Quote: It's just a really weak strike in that area, IMO. This. Definitely not post-mint damage, but nothing offering added value. Added interest, maybe - you don't see such a localized weakness too often.

Best guess is the die had a dallop of machine grease fall onto it at the date area, causing a localized weakness of strike. An interesting mint error, many collect them, though would be considered a detriment when grading high end examples.
