In this 33rd installment of the the Smackdown, I hope to see a wide range of coinage from people contemporary with the great civilizations of the Greeks, Romans and Persians. Many of these people have been the backbone of the great empires of antiquity. They contributed in numerous ways, weather through language, religion, cultural practice or military conscription.

To make this a little interesting he are some rules and constraints.

1) Each member is allowed (3) entries. (600 BC- 1453 AD)
2) The coin must be of that tribal culture.
3) The coin can be an unoffical forgery of a circulated coin of the era. For example Gallic issues of Roman coins of the 3rd cent, or Philip II imitations.
4) The coin cannot be a coin of the Province unless it is minted by the tribes.
5) Have fun. Any Blurb or a Map of/about the culture that minted the coin would be appreciated but not necessary.

Gold-3pts

Silver-2pts

Bronze-1pts

This smackdown will accept entries starting immediately, and will continue until Friday 1-25-13 20:00 EST. Voting will then commence and the winner will be announced on Sunday 1-27-13 at 20:00 EST.

My non-eligible example-

Billon Stater of the Coriosolite Amorican Celts
Channel Islands Isle of Jersey (Located between Britannia and Gaul)
20mm x 6.20g (Group L)
Struck 75-50 BC in Gaul in the area of Brittany.
Obv. Abstract bust of Apollo right.
Rev. Abstract Charioteer with boar below.

These coins where circulated as Julius Caesars Army moved West, driving the Gauls towards the Sea.

This is the only one that I can come up with for now. I really don't know much about it other than it's Keltic from the Rein region.

Unfortunately, I don't believe I have a coin that qualifies this time.

I would think any coins outside Greco-Roman issues are fair game--even early Anglo-Saxon, or Viking coins?
I'll have to look around to see if I have a qualifying coin.
